As your shaking the "Family Tree", and you find information on any of the families that I am searching; just send it my way. I'll appreciate it and try to fit it into the MUNRO & MURRAY family puzzle. I am researching the family of Donald MUNRO. Born on 17 Dec 1799 in Kilmur-Easter, Ross and Cromarty Scotland. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery Middleville, Lanark County, ON. Donald died at the Munro Homestead Lot 22 Con 11 Lanark Township, Lanark County, ON on 22 Jan 1881, he was 81. Occupation: Log Farmer & Weaver. Religion: Church of Kirk, Scotland "Presbyterian". On 5 Jan 1821 Donald, a tenant, at Acharrie, Creich married Margaret Murray also at Acharrie at the time of their wedding, married at Parish of Creich. To date I have no other information on Donald's wife Margaret Murray. I know that they came to Canada and settled at Lot 22 Con 11 LanarK Township, Lanark County, ON in 1830. Margaret died before 19 Apr 1844 as Donald then married his second wife Anne Mary STEAD, daughter of George STEAD (1772-1858) & Catherine THOMPSON (1776-1851), in Lanark , Lanark County ON.
Here's a website address that may be of interest to you, The host of the website resides in the Almonte Area http://www.rootsweb.com/~onlanark/ and has a great deal of information. Also the Lanark County Genealogy Society just recently provided the National Archives with the microfilms of the Almonte Gazette from the 1870's to 1940's. They are available on inter-library loan. Also the Lanark County Genealogy Society opened their Archives at Drummond Centre ON/ it houses a wealth of valuable information. There website address is: http://www.globalgenealogy.com/LCGS/index.htm The Lanark Era Births Marriages and Deaths by Peter Anderson is also another good research area for Almonte area settlers. Peter has composed two books and is currently working on a third. The third should be ready for release in September. The Renfrew Mercury transcripts of Births Marriages and Deaths may also be of help. I believe that there are 5 or 6 books in this group. They are available at the Ottawa Library. ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen & Bruce Pelton <kbpelton@sympatico.ca> To: <SCOTS-IN-CANADA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 22, 2002 5:31 PM Subject: [SCTCDN] ROLL CALL - ANDERSON, KINMOND, LILLICO, STOUGHTON > John ANDERSON b. Don't know if this helps but there is also a site hosted by Veteran's Affairs, where you can search the database for memorials to soldiers who fell in action. Families are encouraged to post personal biographies and information as a sort of virtual war memorial: http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm?source=search
Hello everyone, I have been lurking for awhile so decided to finally post my interests. I am hoping to connect with anyone related to and/or with knowledge of any of the following families: SUTHERLAND-John Donald SUTHERLAND and Janet GRANT (both b/d Scotland) had 7 children (that I know of). Their son James (b. 1759 Kildonan, Sutherlandshire) came to Nova Scotia on the 'Elizabeth & Ann' in 1806. Travelling with him were his daughter Anne (daughter of his first marriage to Mary MACKAY), his second wife, Christiana ROSS and their children Mary b. 1791; Janet b. 1794; William R. b. 1797; Isobel b. 1799; and Ann b. 1804. They had two more children born in Nova Scotia, Christiana b. btw 1807-1809; and Martha b. abt 1810. James' son William R. is my 2ggrandfather. The marriages include the following: Anne m. Alexander GORDON; Mary m. James HOLLAND; Janet m. John FRAME; William R. m. Elizabeth RICHARDSON; Isobel m. Benjamin W.H. CAMPBELL; Ann m. Samuel COLLAS; Christiana m. John ROYNAN; and Martha m. William MACPHEE. Other Canadian connections to John Donald and Janet include: (1) their daughter Isabel (married to Alexander GORDON {not same person as Anne's husband}) had a son, John GORDON who emigrated to Pictou Co., Nova Scotia (2) their son Robert had two sons (names unknown) who are said to have emigrated to the Red River Colony in Manitoba. It has been said that John DIEFENBAKER may have been a descendant. Any Manitoba cousins out there? MORRISON-descendants of John MORRISON b. abt 1765, Isle of Harris, Scotland. His children known to have a connection to Cape Breton include: Ann m. Donald MACLEAN; Margaret m. ? MACKINNON; Angus "Tailor" m. Martha Katherine MACKILLOP (married in Scotland-some of their children were born there- they are my 2ggrandparents); John m. Mary KENNEDY (she was born in Wexford, Ireland); Jessie m. Rev. James FRASER; Mary m. Angus MACLEOD; Sarah m. Donald L. MORRISON; and Christy m. Kenneth MACLEOD. I don't know when they came over, if they came at the same time or not. Angus "Tailor" and Martha came sometime around 1828 to St. Anns, Cape Breton. The descendants are spread far and wide, hope to connect with some. MACLEOD-descendants of Norman MACLEOD b. Isle of Lewis, Scotland include: Norman 'Mor' m. Margaret MACLEAN (married in Scotland, some of their children born there-they are my 2ggrandparents); Angus 'Framer' m. Margaret 'Peggy' MACLEOD; Donald 'Shoemaker' m. Mary MACKAY (believe they were married in Scotland); Kenneth m. ?; Mary m. John MACKAY (know nothing at all about this family); John m. Mary MACLEOD; Unkown daughter m. John SMITH (married in Scotland). Again I'm not sure if they all came over at the same time . I'm assuming Kenneth came over but don't know for sure. He had several children who settled in Cape Breton. Would also be interested in finding out about when these people arrived. Have an approximate time frame of 1825/26 for Norman 'Mor' and Margaret arriving at St. Anns, Cape Breton. Don't know if they arrived direct or for some other point. Any info appreciated on these people. Hope someone out there recognizes a name or two. Juana MacLeod from Cape Breton
Hi Malcom Go to www.archives.ca, Once on the site, you can check genealogy, military records. If you find the relatives you are looking for, there are instructions on how to obtain a copy of the file. I found my grandfather's records (he was in the Canadian Expeditionaly Forces) and then requested a copy of his personnel file. They charge a reasonable fee for copying the pages, but I received 19 pages which give details of his enlistment date, where he went and the dates and his date of discharge. I was pleased with the records I received. Regards Nina Hart
Can some kind soul tell me the website for the Department of National Defence. I am trying to obtain the war service information for two of my wife's uncles who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WW ll. Also what difficulties would one encounter in asking for these details Thanks for your help. Malcolm in Calgary. Alberta
I am having the same difficulties in locating any report of a death record for one of my family. Apologies if I am stating the obvious - but ... there were no vital statistics records kept in Canada until after 1869. Best bet is to search whatever church records exist for that area during the relevant period, or if there are newspapers in local communities, you may be able to search microfilm records through the National Archives in Ottawa. Have you checked the cemeteries online? there is also an index to death records which lists deaths from 1869. (Not that these have been any help to me with my poor ancestor - reputed to have died in the bush in Melancthon twp. in the fall of 1870!) email me off-line if you want these links good luck! National Archives of Canada I wrote away for and received copies of my grandfather's WWI records and tried to get copies of my Uncle's WWII records. This is the information they sent me with regards to Post-First World War personnel records: The military personnel records of those who served subsequent to the First Wrold War are not archival. Release of personal information relating to an individual is not permitted without the written consent of the individual concerned. In the event that the individual has been dead for less than 20 years, limited information may be released directly to members of the immediate family, if proof of death (death certificate, obituary notice, etc.,) and proof of relationship (baptismal certificate, marriage certificate or any other document that clearly demonstrates the relationship) are provided. A wallet-size birth certificate which does not state the parent's name is not accepted as proof of relationship. There are no restrictions placed on information relating to an individual who has been dead for more than 20 years, however, proof of death is still required. As a niece you are not considered to be a member of the immediate family. Immediate family is defined as parent, spouse, sibling, child or grandchild. If service men are deceased more than 20 years their records are accessible. If they are deceased less than 20 years a member of the immediate family may make the request for copies of the service files. http://www.archives.ca/ Hope this information helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Malcolm Shaw" <shaw@ezpost.com> To: <SCOTS-IN-CANADA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 22, 2002 5:29 PM Subject: [SCTCDN] Department of National Defence > Can some kind soul tell me the website for the Department of National Defence. I thought this might have come from my Welsh roots but I'm having no luck finding it amongst the Welsh.....Could it be, it's from my Scotch roots? This is a rhyme my grandfather would say wiggling each finger or toe as he went along. Phonetically speaking:.... 1st finger (thumb) - Mini Bowd 2nd finger - Peace Boyd 3rd finger - Penti cogan 4th finger - Nicki Pippin 5th finger - Chicki Bach Bach 1st finger (thumb) - unknown 2nd finger - Tom Sooglun 3rd finger - Long Harris 4th finger - Short Morris 5th finger - Wee Barro Minnion Maybe it's one of those made up Welsh stories? Hello... thanks for offering the lookup! :) I am looking for my gg-grandfather, Charles A. Shaw, born in June 1854 in Canada (dont know where in Canada). According to the 1900 Census for Michigan, he came to the U.S. in 1888, and he married his wife in Michigan around 1892, and had children here. Problem is, i dont have any info on siblings or parents. His wife and kids were living here in Saginaw, Michigan when he drowned in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada in 1901. So there's no death certificate here, and he's not buried here either. So, unfortunately, in the end, all I have is his name and birthyear. But i know he was in Canada in 1881. I'm really beginning to wonder if he was married before, in Canada, then remarried later to my gg-grandmother. I'm really hoping you can find anything for me, he is a brick wall for me. Thanks very much!!! Tina in Michigan ------------------------------------------------ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!

Hi... this is my first posting to this list.. :) I am looking for siblings/parents of Alexander Patterson. He was born in Scotland (dont know where in Scotland) in 1856. I know that by 1879 he was in Ontario, Canada, because that's when, and where, is first daughter, Della (Adelia) was born. His wife, Mary (Pickard) was born in Canada, and they married sometime around 1878, I am assuming in Canada. By 1881, he moved his wife and daughter to Saginaw, Michigan, and had 6 more children- John, Hattie, Maud, James, Raymond, and Mildred. Alexander died here in Saginaw, but i have been unable to find his death record. The courthouse thinks he may have died in a hospital in a neighboring town. He died in 1917. I have tried researching what censuses i could find in Ontario, and searched other websites as well, but i am having no luck. If anyone finds any of this info familiar, or have any ideas of where i could go from here to find out more info, please email me... LadyGoldie3@ex! cite.com Thanks!!!! Ed -- This is too weird. I backtracked on the url to: http://www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk And a page popped up, stating I had reached the index page of Archaic Medical Terms. It then had only *1* link to: http://www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk/ArchaicMedicalTerms.htm Which is the same url! When I went forward to retrace my steps, and then back to the page, it said page wasn't on the server. Perhaps they are doing work on the page, or perhaps the connection is tweeky. Just got to it again -- so it must be up there. Try re-loading it. "Acts of Burial" for the Province of Quebec states: "No burial (or cremation) can take place before the expiration of twenty-four hours after decease, unless special permission has been obtained from the police." Susan, you have had a couple of very valid answers, and in my opinion it was more than likely cost that prevented a stone being placed at the gravesite of your gg-grandfather. I have looked on the net to see if cremations were performed circa 1862.....I cannot find any information.....The above quote I realise is about the Province of Quebec, and more than likely is recent. But the article I gleaned it from, would stand true, at any given time, in my opinion, anyway. I will send the article to anyone, off list who wants it, but I will not post article to the list.
