    1. [SCTCDN] WALTER SCOTT
    2. Jess Gillette
    3. My wife's great grandfather, WALTER SCOTT, was born abt. 1835 in Scotland. His father was JOHN SCOTT, and his mother was JENNIE WARDROP. At some point, he migrated to Canada, eventually buying property in Monteagle Twp, Nanooth, Hastings County in about 1876. About 1859, he had married MARY WALL, born 1841 in Ireland. They had 12 children. In about 1888, he moved the family to Champion, Chase County, Nebraska. Additional moves found him in Wyoming and Montana, and eventually arriving in Fidelto Island, Washington (near Seattle) in 1895. The entire trip being made in a covered wagon. There is a close relationship between WALTER SCOTT and HERCULES SCOTT, born 1803 in Scotland. HERCULES emigrated to Canada somewhere between 1840 and 1845. Possibly, WALTER emigrated at the same time. I suspect that WALTER SCOTT was a son of HERCULES SCOTT'S older brother JOHN SCOTT, but have no documentation to support that. I have been able to find information on HERCULES SCOTT, but I need information on the date WALTER SCOTT came to Canada, as well as anything that would definitely tie him to HERCULES. Jess Gillette

    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. The following is an article regarding our legal efforts to regain public access to Historic Census records. It is published in the Wednesday 31 July issue of the Tri-City News, a community newspaper for my area, that interviewed me a couple of weeks ago. The article as published has a couple of errors in it that I have been assured will be corrected for the next issue. The errors are that the 1906 Census records should have been released in 1998 rather than 1993, and the numbers of signatures sent should be shown as 50,000 instead of 5,000. Happy Hunting Gordon A. The children of Duncan McCALLUM and Flora McCALLUM were Neil McCALLUM born abt 1836. Alexander, McCALLUM born abt 1838. Betsy McCALLUM born abt 1841, died December 24, 1861 in Lochaber, Papineau, Quebec, Canada Dun (Don?) McCALLUM born abt 1842. Mary McCALLUM born abt 1845 died May 04, 1874 in Lochaber, Papineau, Quebec, Canada, married Hugh McNeill. James McCALLUM born in Quebec about 1847. Angus McCALLUM born in Quebec about 1849. Catherine McCALLUM born in Quebec about 1851 died November 30, 1876 in Lochaber, Papineau, Quebec, Canada, married Robert Small. John McCALLUM born in Quebec about 1853. Charles McCALLUM born in Quebec 1857 died 1859 in Lochaber, Papineau, Quebec, Canada. Jessie Harriet McCALLUM (my grandmother) born in Quebec 1857, died September 10, 1923 in Niagara, Wisconsin, U.S.A. Albert McCALLUM born in Ontario about 1867. Nina McCALLUM born in Ontario about 1871. (This list is a combination the 1861 and 1871 censuses and cemetery records. Duncan and Flora are listed as parents on Jessie's marriage record. There may be older children who had left before the 1861 census. I'm also puzzled by the fact that the last two children were born in Ontario since the family was still in Quebec in the 1871 census. Since the census does not have a column for "Relationship to Head", they could be grandchildren or niece and nephew. I have been unable to find any information on John McARTHUR's parents. Since the family was Baptist, nothing can be found in the Old Parish Records. I have not found anything to narrow the location within Perthshire. Family information suggests that he is related somehow to the Dalesville, Quebec McArthurs but I have not been able to establish a link. I would be delighted to hear from anyone with a connection to these families. There are enough children and grandchildren that there must be some descendants out there. I have more information on Arthur Stanley MacArthur's descendants if we find a connection. Alison McIntyre mcintyr@uakron.edu

    1. [SCTCDN] Golspie/Sutherland Book
    2. This book is on Ebay for $9.99 US. for anyone who is interested. Maggi An Oral History of the East Sutherland Fisherfolk.A study of the Highland Gaelic-speaking fishing town of Golspie in East Sutherland, Scotland. Based in large part on the memories of Alexander Sutherland and his wife Elizabeth (MacDonald), the author gathered material over a period of fifteen years (1963-1978). With b/w photos, maps. Now out-of-print, this a hard to find copy of a book that provides a look at an early Scottish fishing village and is a model for oral histories - also would be great for Golspie or East Sutherland genealogy research.

    3. Does anyone have access to marriage info in Montreal? I'm looking for a marriage that would have taken place between the census of 1881 and June of 1882 for John A. Campbell and Isabella E. McCormick. She was Catholic and he Presbyterian so I'm not even sure which church they would have married in.

    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Thank you Keith. It is unlikely that StatCan will choose an "unconditional surrender" and will instead choose to go down shooting. If their decision were based upon common sense, and consideration of all of the legal statutes that apply, we would be viewing the 1906 Census records today, and the 1911 records shortly after 1 June next year. Unfortunately, these things, at least in this particular issue, do not seem to play much part in the reasoning of our Chief Statistician. Thank you for your support. Gordon A. GORDON - I have read your posting of today with great interest especially the detail and rationale which you have set out clearly and distinctly. As a retired bureaucrat (policy adviser) I conclude that you have found the "smoking gun" and that Statscan's choice, in the end, is "unconditional surrender". Press on! 2. Greachen: It does appear we are related. There is a very large family from James Sutherland "the parson," and growing. I am still in the process myself of locating all my grandfather HEMAN's family; I am quite curios as to who this gentleman was and who was his grandfather. Would you share some of the family tree. Let me assure you I do have proof from Heman that he is my grandfather. and I will check an 1827 land record of the Red River Settlement to see if Isobella was married in Red River. Her sister Catherine was as well as her sister Barbara. I mention these to let you know I do have the family names and it's an ongoing search for all the children. Maggi sunny California. I thinkk it's a strong possibility. About seven years ago I placed a query > regarding the Bannerman/ Sutherland line in the Simcoe Country Ancestors > News.
