Hi Everyone, I keep putting out queries for my John A. Campbell and Isabella McCormick's marriage so I wanted to write in and say it was found. A woman in Quebec, Louise (had to mention her name as I am still so thrilled), spent the day at the archives today and found their marriage. The "A" stands for Albert and all parties signed it..... which was so great to see those sigs. Now I still have to find John's parent's.... William Campbell and Elizabeth Smith. Sherry

I found this marriage on the Family Search site and was hoping that someone would know something of it. It says "Eliza Smith, spouse: William Henry Campbell, marriage: April 11, 1850 - Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England." The William Campbell I'm looking for was born in Scotland about 1828 but his wife, Elizabeth Smith, was born in England. They would have arrived in Canada before Dec. 1858 because their son, John A. Campbell was born in Quebec according to all census entries he's found in. Hoping for any info anyone might have. Sherry
Just wanted to check because a message I sent earlier was sent back to me saying that the list did not exist. Hope this goes through.

Hi! We are doing a full re-vamp of our surname submission section on Family Roots. If you have submitted surnames for this section in the past, please check your entries, especially if you have changed servers. We are sending out test messages, and any bounced addresses will be pulled if we don't hear from you. You can access the Pictou researchers main page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pictou/respic.htm To submit changes or add your surnames, please use the form at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pictou/infsub.htm We're focusing on getting the pictou section fixed this week, so we definitely need to here from you now, especially with new addresses. The Antigonish section will be the next to be updated. Thanks! Hi, I would use some help in deciphering some old notes. I have looked up the definition of portioner and know it's definition, but will list the entries as written. James Allison Por Portioner, born Carraith, Scotland marries Elizabeth Poe who had a son Thomas Allison Portioner, who married Elizabeth Keneely, who had daughter Elizabeth who married John Nielson and they had 4 children: Elizabeth Wilson, Jessie Wilson, Arabella Wilson, and Maria Wilson. To start, I take the portioner off James Allison and get James Allison Por? What would Por be? He married an Elizabeth Poe. Might his last name be Poe and Por is just a hard to read Poe? But the son Thomas Allison (dropping the portioner), wouldn't he have been Poe as well then? And what would be the reason for a John Nielson marrying Elizabeth Allison and having 4 children with the last name Wilson? They were apparently married in Feb. of 1817 and the notes say John died in Ayr in Feb. 1824. That would mean Elizabeth was left with 4 small children. She would probably have remarried, but would the children automatically take the step-father's name? I also cannot find a Carraith where James Allison (Por, Poe?) was born? Any ideas on what this might be a misspelling of? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. Judy Buller

Hello List, Those on the list of Isle of Lewis descent may be interested to know that there is a webpage describing Huron Township Ontarios Lewis Settlement's 150th Anniversary Celebrations to take place in Ripley, Ontario, Canada on August 17 & 18, 2002. The site lists a schedule of events, contact information etc. The event will celebrate the culture, language and heritage of a remarkable group of 109 families who were evicted from their crofts on the Isle of Lewis in 1851 and eventually settled in Huron Township, Bruce County.. The community maintained their Hebridean traditions well into the 20th Century. In fact, there are even a few Gaelic speakers still left in the area. The event promises to be a memorable experience with the Mayor/Convenor of Stornoway, Vice Mayor/Convenor of Stornoway and Gaelic Officer all making the trek to Ripley, Bruce County from the Isle of Lewis. My band and I will be performing the live version of my CD, The Silent Ones, A Legacy of the Highland Clearances at the Festival on Sunday August 18 between 2 and 4 PM at the Ripley Community Centre. I will also have a booth at the festival. So please drop by if you can make it. Although the festivities are centered around Hebridean Heritage, the event promises to be of interest to anyone of Scots descent. Please find a link below to the Lewis Settlement's 150th Anniversary Website. http://lewiscelebration.tripod.com <http://lewiscelebration.tripod.com/> Hope to see you there! Angus Macleod You can also find additional information on the Lewis Settlement of Huron Township and my CD, The Silent Ones, A Legacy of the Highland Clearances at my website located at www.torquil.net <http://www.torquil.net/> . The page contains a good deal of information on the Isle of Lewis, the Lewis Clearances and the Hebridean Communities of Huron Township, Ontario and Compton County (Eastern Townships), Quebec.
Below is another link that may be of interest for those who went from the Maritimes to New Zealand. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nzbound/nzbound/maritime.htm Christine
Here is a site that may interest a lot of folks, it is about Scots Settlers to Quebec, mainly the Eastern Townships, the Scots are from the Islands off the West Coast of Scotland.....Hebridean Scots is the name of the site, does have some interesting things. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/9917/contents.htm Regards Christine
These types of stories should be shared, this list would be a great place to share stories of this type, this is what the backbone or meat and potatoes of SCTCDN is.....culture, our heritage, how our ancestors lived and how we have progressed. Just imagine if the walls could talk, we would have all our genealogical questions answered.......that is of course we were fortunate enough to have an ancestral home in our possesion!
