    1. Re: [SCTCDN] CAMPBELL, Thomas b. Abt. 1800 [Sct?] to Simcoe Co. Ont?
    2. Janice McNabb
    3. Hello Listers I couldn't resist the call of the Campbells! My puzzle is to locate James Campbell, m. Eliza McNab who moved to Niagara Any suggestions would be most appreciated! As before, Would any descendants of these principals, please get in touch! We have documents to share! Janice McNabb Descendants of Thomas Campbell THOMAS CAMPBELL [nd] married MARY ARMSTRONG [nd] Children i. ANN CAMPBELL, b. 14 December 1823, New York; m. ROBERT MCNABB March 1840 in Mono Township, Simcoe County, Ontario; d. 27 July 1881, Port Crescent, Michigan ii. JAMES CAMPBELL, b. Abt. 1820; d. Abt. 1871; m. ELIZABETH "ELIZA" MCNABB, Abt. 1844, [Mono Twp.?]; d. Abt. 1845, [Niagara?]. . Generation No. 2 ANNE CAMPBELL was born 14 December 1823 in New York, and died 27 July 1881 in Port Crescent, Michigan. She married ROBERT MCNABB March 1840 in Mono Township, Simcoe County, Ontario (Presbyterian Church), son of HENRY MACNAB and ELIZABETH LIVINGSTON. He was born 25 December 1816 in Dublin, Ireland, and died 23 September 1899 in Elkton, (Huron County) Michigan, USA. In 1881, on August 05, Anne's death was reported in the Huron County News. It reads: "On July 27, 1881, Mrs. Ann McNabb, wife of Robert McNabb of Mead, passed away at age 57. She came from Gray County, Ontario to this country 10 years ago. She has been an invalid for one and a half years. Her disease finally dissolving itself into dropsy". Dropsy, or Edema, is an abnormal excess accumulation of serous fluid in connective tissue or in a serous cavity such as the peritoneum, or lining of the abdomen. There is a discrepancy as to the day on which Anne died. The article above states "July 27", while family reports state "July 23". Anne was buried at Port Crescent Cemetery (at the tip of the "thumb" of Michigan). The cemetery was near the beach and "simply drifted over with sand" and the exact burial location is no longer known to anyone in the family. Marriage Notes for ANNE CAMPBELL and ROBERT MCNABB: From the register of Rev. Alexander Lewis, Presbyterian Minister of Mono Mills, "On (August 21, 1840 ???) March 01, 1840 Robert McNab, 28 of Mono, born Mono, (parents blank) to Ann Campbell, 20 of Mono, born ______ dau. of Thomas & Ann Campbell. Witness: Alex. Irvin of Mono" Notes for ROBERT MCNABB: In 1831, Robert McNabb's parents (Henry Harry and Elizabeth) and his brothers and sister(s) came to "Muddy" York (Toronto). In 1837, Henry exchanged an original crown land patent for one at Mulmer Corners (Ont). At the same time, Henry obtained land for Robert. In 1851, Robt. sold his farm to his brother John. Then, in the 1851 Census for Simcoe County, Ontario, (on file in Grand Rapids, Mi) it is documented that Robert (41 years old) and Anne (37) were living with Anne's father- Thomas Campbell (listed as a 63 year old "Yeoman", born in Ireland, a Presbyterian, and a Widower). Robert was listed as a "Labourer" (possibly worked for his father-in-law), born in Ireland, and religion was listed as Church of England. The house was described as a "one story log house in Mono Township, Simcoe County". There are references to Anne's sister- Eliza, age 20, and two brothers- Thomas, age 24, and Foster, age 22. Also listed were four sons of Robt. and Anne- Thomas (21), Henry (16), Robert (10), and William (4), as well as two daughters- Mary (8), and Izabella (1). The spelling for Robt. and children was "McNab". The only person listed as "attending school" was young Robt., and young Thomas Campbell, Foster Campbell, and Robt., Anne, and Mary were listed as "cannot read or write". In 1871, Robert and Anne moved from Gray County in Ontario, Canada, to Meade Township, Mi. reportedly to avoid the high Canadian taxes. A land grant in Huron County, Meade Twp., Michigan is recorded. Huron County consists of the tip of the "thumb" portion of Michigan. Huron County consists of towns such as Bad Axe, Elkton, Harbor Beach, Port Austin, and Sebewaing. [Brøderbund Family Archive #116, Ed. 1, Census Index: Ontario, Canada, 1871, Individual: Mcnab, Robert Sex: Male Age in 1871: 53 Calc. birth date: 1817-1818 Birthplace: Ireland Ethnic origin: Irish Religious affiliation: Church of England, Anglican Occupation: Farmer Province: Ontario District: Grey South Sub-district: Melancthon Division: 1 National Archives of Canada microfilm roll #: C-9951 Page: 24. This person is listed as a head of household. In 1875, Robt. became a Naturalized U.S. Citizen, and is listed in the 1880 Michigan census as "Robert McNabbe, note "e". The following is the Huron County 1880 Census listings: "Robert McNabbe", white male age 62 married, farmer born in Ireland. Also his parents born in Ireland. Ann, white female, wife of above age 57, occupation keeping house, born in New York state. Father and Mother born in Ireland. Robert Jr. white, male, single, born in Canada, a farmer. Father born in Ireland, mother N.Y. (Robert Jr. age was 29). Alexander, white male 16 years old. Born in Canada. Father born Ireland, Mother born N.Y. Henry, white male 14 years old born in Canada. Father born in Ireland, mother in N.Y." After Robert's wife's death (Anne) in 1881, Robert lived with his son Matthew Alexander, until his own death in 1899. Robert is buried in Lot 90, Block 5, Section 13, of Souletown Cemetery located in Chandler Township, Elkton, Michigan. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Marriage Notes for ANNE CAMPBELL and ROBERT MCNABB: From the register of Rev. Alexander Lewis, Presbyterian Minister of Mono Mills, "On (August 21, 1840 ???) March 01, 1840 Robert McNab, 28 of Mono, born Mono, (parents blank) to Ann Campbell, 20 of Mono, born ______ dau. of Thomas & Ann Campbell. Witness: Alex. Irvin of Mono" Children of ANNE CAMPBELL and ROBERT MCNABB are: i. ISABELLA3 MCNABB, b. 1860, Rosemont, Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada; d. Abt. 1920, Unknown. ii. MATHEW "ALEX" ALEXANDER MCNABB, b. 2 July 1863, Rosemont, Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada; d. 1927, Unknown. iii. HENRY "HANK" MCNABB, b. 1866, Ontario, Canada; d. 9 March 1954, Bad Axe, (Huron County) Michigan, USA. iv. ELIZABETH MCNABB, b. Abt. 1840, Rosemont, Ont.; d. Abt. 1909, Ontario. v. GEORGE MCNABB25,26, b. Abt. 1867. Notes for GEORGE MCNABB: From Donna Lily McNabb Odean' McNabb Family Tree "unconfirmed member of this family" said to have been killed in a fall.[McNabb - Ralph.FTW] vi. HENRY MCNABB27,28, b. Abt. 1845, Rosemont, Ont.; d. Abt. 1866, Lake Michigan. Notes for HENRY MCNABB: death attributed to drowning in Lake Michigan on crossing from Ontario. Both Ralph McNabb (Michigan) and Odean McNabb Family Tree mention this event. It is family recollection that Henry McNabb was thrown overboard into Lake Huron either on purpose or accidentally, from a boat he was riding. The boat was bound for the "thumb" (south, mid-eastern) part of Michigan from Ontario, Canada (Lake Huron) when a very outspoken Presbyterian (Henry) got into a heated argument on religion with some Catholics on board. Tempers escalated until Henry was thrown overboard and quickly drowned. In 1866, just 1 year later, the last child (and son) of Robert and Anne McNabb was born- he was also named Henry McNabb, after his older, deceased brother. The older Henry's body was never recovered. vii. WILLIAM JOHN MCNABB, b. 18 February 1858, Sherbrooke, Amaranth (Dufferin County), Ontario, Canada; d. 7 October 1928, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. viii. MARY MCNABB, b. 1853, Rosemont, Ont.; d. Abt. 1943, Flint, Michigan. ix. ROBERT MCNABB, b. 1851, Rosemont, Ont.; d. 1934, Elkton, Michigan. x. THOMAS MCNABB, b. Abt. 1840; d. 1920, Coopers Falls, Ont.. xi. ISABEL MCNABB29, b. 1860. xii. HENRY MCNABB30, b. 1866; d. 1954, Bad Axe, Michigan; m. JANE CLARKE31; b. 1865, Crosswell, Michigan; d. 1946, Bad Axe, Michigan. JAMES CAMPBELL was born Abt. 1820, and died Abt. 1871. He married ELIZABETH "ELIZA" MCNABB Abt. 1844 in [Mono], daughter of HENRY MACNAB and ELIZABETH LIVINGSTON. She was born 1829 in Canada, and died Abt. 1845. Notes for JAMES CAMPBELL: Elizabeth and her husband James Campbell lived near Niagara, Ontario, Canada. James is the brother of Anne Campbell, who was married to James' wife's brother- Robert McNabb.

    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. 2001 - the Year of the Volunteer Many will be aware that the year 2001 was designated as a worldwide "Year of the Volunteer". Few are aware, however, that your co-chairs of the Canada Census Committee, Muriel M. Davidson and myself, were honoured, through the sponsorship of Senator Lorna Milne, to receive a beautiful Certificate and a pewter Medal that commemorated our volunteer efforts related to the Canada Census campaign. Each Member of Parliament, and each Senator of Canada were given ten of these Certificates bound in an imitation leather folder (Green for the House of Commons and Red for the Senate) to distribute to those they felt had contributed significantly in various areas of volunteerism. Approximately 4,000 Medals, having the same "Year of the Volunteer" logo shown on the reverse side of Canada's 2001 dime, were struck by Canada's Mint. They will never be struck again. Considering that Canada's population is more than 32 million people, to be one of approximately 4,000 being recognized by presentation of these Certificates and Medals is an extraordinary, and probably once in a lifetime, honour. My Certificate and Medal were presented to me by Member of Parliament Hedy Fry in December 2001 at a ceremony she held for presentations to those volunteers she was honouring. The Certificate reads: Presented to Gordon Watts in this Year of the Volunteer for his dedication to the cause of Public Access to the Historic Census of Canada And for his hours of work in that cause as Co-Chair of the Canada Census Campaign Presented on behalf of The Honourable Lorna Milne, Senator December, 2001 While Muriel Davidson was aware earlier that she would receive her Certificate and Medal, Susan Fennell, Mayor of the city of Brampton, Ontario, did not officially present it to her until March of 2002. Muriel received her award during opening ceremonies for a ward of the Brampton Memorial Hospital where she has also been a volunteer. Muriel' s Certificate included a list of many other volunteer activities with which she has been involved over the years. For those interested, scans of my Certificate and Medal will be included in my next Global Genealogy column. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census - Our legal case
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Our legal case is progressing more or less as expected, although we have modified our Application slightly. Our original Application sought only to have the Court make an Order "compelling the Chief Statistician to transfer the nominal returns and schedules of the 1906 Census of the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta to the National Archivist, and, further and in the alternative, for an Order directing, or alternatively permitting, the National Archivist to make this information available to the public for research purposes". The modification to our Application seeks further, and in the alternative, Declarations: (a) that the National Archivist, and not the Chief Statistician, has care and control of the records from the 1906 Census; (b) in the alternative, if, contrary to the Applicants submission, the Chief Statistician does have care and control of the records from the 1906 Census, then Chief Statistician is under a legal obligation to transfer control of these records to the National Archivist; (c) further, upon being declared to be in care or control of the records from the 1906 Census or upon being transferred control of such records, the National Archivist has the power to disclose this information to members of the public upon request for research purposes. In order to amend our Application to include a request for Declaratory Relief and to extend the time limit for us to file our Applicants' Record we required the agreement of parties on the other side. The lawyer for the Privacy Commissioner consented right away. The Justice Department, on behalf of the Attorney General, National Archivist and Chief Statistician took longer to state they "do not oppose" our application. Not opposing the application is not quite the same as consenting to it. The Prothonotary (don't ask - that is the term Lois used) will now consider our written application and presumably grant it promptly since it is unopposed. As of 12 September our Applicants' Record was ready to go except for the copying and binding. The key part of our Record is the written argument. The Respondents then have to file their Respondent's Record with their written argument. Lois will then requisition a Hearing. If there are no more unexpected delays, she hopes the hearing will be before Christmas. This will not be like a trial since all the evidence is in the Affidavits. There will be no witnesses. Lawyers will present oral argument and be quizzed by the Federal Court Judge. This will take place in Calgary and be open to the public. The Federal Court rooms in Calgary are not all that big and crowds cannot be accommodated. Legal arguments are not terribly interesting to non-lawyers, however, other circumstances being considered, I have hopes that I will be able to be in Calgary to observe the proceedings.
