    1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census - Statement by MP Murray Calder
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All FYI, the following statement by MP Murray Calder, our champion in the House of Commons, was made during Members Statements on Wednesday, 9 October 2002. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm ======================================= Murray Calder, M.P., S.O. 31, October 9, 2002 Mr. Speaker, there are about 7.5 million Canadians engaged in genealogy. This is one of our most popular hobbies. Thousands of genealogists, historians and medical researchers have asked the House to allow access to post-1901 census records. I was delighted last week to hear the House Leader say that the government plans to introduce legislation this fall to allow researchers access to these records after 92 years. This move is very welcome. I note that 162 members of this House are now on record as supporting their release. The census records up to and including 1901 have been a very valuable source for researchers. These are available on microfilm through archives and libraries across the country. I urge the government to ensure that later census records be just as accessible to researchers.

    1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census - Passing of Senator Ronald J. Duhamel
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Ronald J. Duhamel: b. 2 March 1930, d. 30 September 2002 It is with regret that we have learned of the recent passing of Senator Ronald J. Duhamel. We ask that those seeking access to Post 1901 Census records refrain from sending further requests for support to his email or snail mail addresses. His name will shortly be removed from the Senators Scoreboard and his position will be shown as vacant. Gordon A. 1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census - Our Legal Case
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Some might wonder with the announcement on 3 October 2002, regarding the intention of government to bring down legislation dealing with public access to 92-year old Census records, if we will be continuing with our legal action. The answer to the question is a quick, resounding YES!! While the intention to bring down legislation has been announced, it remains to be seen if it meets our requirements and expectations. Senator Lorna Milne continues to work to see that it does, however our legal action is necessary to keep those drafting the legislation 'honest'. What we seek is the SAME UNRESTRICTED ACCESS to Post 1901 Census records that we currently have for records up to 1901. NO STRINGS ATTACHED. We have tried at every opportunity to convey this to the powers that be. Our legal action will continue! Our Applicants' Records has been filed. The Respondents' Records are due on or before Oct. 19 or 20. As soon as Lois receives both Records from the opposition, she will requisition a hearing. It is then up to the Court as to when that hearing will be scheduled. We will continue to keep you posted on anything that happens. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted.

    1. [SCTCDN] HOWELL/CAMPBELL
    2. Jane MacIntyre
    3. Does anyone know anything about the HOWELL family? I am looking for information about MARION HOWELL, probably born around 1800. Family lore says that she married Duncan CAMPBELL, b PEI d NB and had 10 children - Mary (January 1822), Betsy (1823?), John (1825), Archie (1826), Neil (1833), Catherine (c1845), Alexander (c1847), Sarah, George, and Ann. Duncan was born in Grand River, Lot 16 and died 24 dec 1888 in Bass River, Kent, NB, aged 87. He went to NB in 1825 with his brothers Peter and John (my father would tell of 'great-uncle Peter' who lived to be well over 100 and walked into town every day). May thanks for any suggestions you may have - Jane

    2. Barb Andrew
    3. I am once again asking the list for research suggestions re: my LANE ancestors. All trails followed to date have ended in dead ends. My gg grandfather, Thomas Lane was born at Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, Scotland on Sept. 12, 1824. This information was obtained from his MI and death certificate, and I have not been able to find any record of him or any family in Stirlingshire. It is said in family lore that when arriving in Canada prior to 1855, the family members changed their surname from McLean to Lean and Lane. Thomas married Elizabeth Brydon in 1855 near Ingersoll. Ont. And the recorded name was Thomas Lean. I have ordered the looked at the original record on film and that is all the information provided. The Lanes lived at Greenock Twp. Bruce Co. Ontario at the time of the 1861 census, and in 1871 Thomas is listed in Woodstock, Ontario; occupation grocer. In 1880 the family moved on to Birtle, Mb. Neither volume 1 nor 2 of "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation" has any mention of this family. Would any list member know of any other searchable records I may be able to access? Ships records have come up empty and the children were born prior to civil registration. Are immigration records available to be searched? Sorry for the long post. Would be grateful for any suggestions to help me find out where these folks came from in Scotland and what their Surname really was. I am beginning to believe they just appeared in the middle of Bruce Co. one morning from the heavens above!!!! Sincerely, Barb Andrew Brandon, Mb. Canada

    1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census - Scoreboard Totals
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. With a letter from Patricia Sears, MP Scott Reid (Lanark - Carleton) loses his Red X of opposition and is awarded a Gold Tick of Support. Scoreboard totals currently stand at: House of Commons For: 162 Against: 3 Non-committal: 60 No answer: 74 Senate For: 36 Against: 3 Non-committal: 18 No answer: 40 With the long awaited announcement that the Government will introduce legislation regarding access to 92-year old Census records we have taken a giant step forward. Our job, however, is not yet completed. We need to continue to write low-key letters to our elected and appointed officials requesting, and encouraging, support for legislation that gives us exactly the same unrestricted access to records after 1901 that we currently have for those up to 1901. Additionally, we do not wish to see on the schedules of future Census any check-box option that would create a very fragmented history for those seeking information in the future. Before writing, check the Scoreboards to learn the position of those to whom you write. Thank those with Gold Ticks for their past support and request that they continue that support. For the others, politely and respectfully request that they give full consideration to the issues relating to Census and seek their supportive response. Do not forget to forward to me any responses received that differ from the positions shown on the Scoreboard. Without your input I have no way of updating the information shown there. Thank you all for your support. With your continued support we will achieve the goal we seek. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. 1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census - News Release from Senator Lorna Milne
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. MILNE DELIGHTED AS GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES IMMINENT RELEASE OF POST-1901 CENSUS RECORDS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Ottawa - October 3, 2002 Senator Lorna Mine (Lib - Peel County) was pleased and relieved this morning at the government's announcement that it will introduce legislation this fall to allow for the release of historic census records. "The years of hard work by thousands of grassroots Canadians has finally paid off," she exclaimed. "The government has listened carefully to the arguments that the Canada Census Committee has been making for four years and has come to the same conclusion - that historic census records are a fundamental part of Canada's historic record that must be made available to the public." The government's announcement came at the National Press Club this morning when Government House Leader Don Boudria laid out the government 's legislative agenda. Minister Boudria stated that the government will be introducing legislation to allow for the release of 92-year old census records for historic research purposes. Although the announcement was made by Minister Boudria, Milne was very quick to give all the credit on the file to Industry Minister Alan Rock, who is responsible for Statistics Canada. "From the first day of his appointment as Industry Minster in January, Minister Rock has taken this issue very seriously and has devoted an enormous amount of time to the file," Milne explained. "The government would not be in any position to make this announcement today if it wasn' t for the fact that he cares as much about this issue as I do, and he was willing to take the fight directly to the cabinet table." The government has not yet released a draft of the legislation, but that is not normally done until it is introduced in the House of Commons. "Sometimes the devil is in the details," Milne noted. "But I am confident that the major barriers to the release of post-1901 census information have been removed. I intend to work closely with Minister Rock over the next few weeks to ensure that the details are worked out properly." For more information, please contact Jeff Paul, Policy Advisor to the Hon. Lorna Milne at 613-947-7695. - 30 - Gordon A. 1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census -- PLEASE READ -- VERY IMPORTANT
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. Let the bells ring out and the banners fly! It's too good to be true, I know, but... ...our efforts are starting to pay off! I received a wake up call from the Honourable Senator Lorna Milne this morning. She called to advise me that the Federal Government of Canada hs finally recognized the concerns of genealogists and historians insofar as regaining public access to Historic Census records is concerned. It is OFFICIAL. The Honourable Don Boudria, Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons made an address to the Newsmakers Breakfast this morning (3 October 2002) at the National Press Club. The topic of his address was "The Government's Fall Legislative Program". On page four of an eight page summary of notes, Mr. Boudria noted, in relation to the coming months... "Other legislation will also be introduced respecting: -- The release of 92-year old census records for historical research purposes -- which responds to recommendations and work done by parliamentarians in the House of Commons and Senate such as MP Calder and Senator Milne;" Finally!! We are pleased that in making this announcement, Mr. Boudria saw fit to recognize the work of our champions in the Senate and House of Commons, Senator Lorna Milne and MP Murray Calder. A word of caution. Our work is not yet finished. Nor will it be finished until such time as the legislation referred to has been introduced, gone through the hoops in the House of Commons and the Senate, and has received Royal Assent to be passed into law. We have made a giant step forward in our effort to regain access, and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. We look forward to viewing the legislation mentioned by Mr. Boudria and hope that our concerns do not get lost in the details. We must be vigilant to ensure that such legislation meets our concerns and provides the same access to Post 1901 Census records that we currently have for records up to 1901. Senator Milne assured me that she will continue to work on our behalf in this regard. Take a breather. Savour the moment. Then send a low-key message to your MP and Senator seeking their support for this legislation when it is introduced. Stress that you seek the same access to Post 1901 records that we currently have for earlier Census, and that we do not view (as indicated by another Minister there may be) a 'check-box option' on the Census forms as desireable. Our thanks to all for your past and future support. Without the support of all of you, nothing would be happening. Have a GREAT day!!!!!!! Gordon A. 3. My apologies to listowners in advance for posting this off-topic (and sensitive) message to your list. Readers PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE ON THE LIST!! ============================= Greetings All. In the last 24 hours there seems to have been a tremendous upsurge in transmission of virus carrying messages. During that period, at least 40% of the messages I have received have been transmitted by PCs infected by possibly a couple of new viruses currently making the rounds. With the number of email I receive daily, 40% makes for a great number of messages, and an equal number of people whose PCs are infected. Many of these messages will appear to come from a mail list to which you do not belong, or from someone you do not know, or have never communicated with before. Many, but not all, of those I have received seemed to come from overseas mail lists. They may or may not show an attachment. They may appear to contain an incomplete message. For information on the viruses that are currently making the rounds please check the following websites: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.h tml http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.opaserv.worm .html http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-960139.html If the message you receive wraps these URLs, make sure you utilize the full line ending in .html PLEASE, people. Keep your anti-virus programs updated on a daily basis and do at least weekly scans of your PC to ensure you are not infected. These precautions will greatly reduce the proliferation of malicious viruses. For those using Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook or Outlook Express (as I do) I recommend taking advantage of the frequent free security updates available for download from Microsoft. My apologies once more to listowners for posting this off topic message. Listers, PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE ON THE LIST. If you feel an uncontrollable (although unnecessary) urge to respond to this message, please do so privately. Do not feel it necessary to respond to this message -- just take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, and others, by ensuring your PC is not infected. Gordon A. 3. Hi, Sorry, I do not know of these surnames in my tree; however, I do have a book called "Place Names Of Ontario", by Alan Rayburn and it has a short entry on both Ekfrid & Glencoe. Just for your info and history of the areas I'll type it for you. 1. Page 108:" EKFRID: This township in Middlesex County was named in 1820 for Egfrith, a king of the Northumbrians who was killed in 685, during a battle with the Picts near present-day Forfar in Scotland." 2. Page 135: "GLENCOE: First known as "Mosa Station", this village in Mosa Township, Middlesex County, 45 km southwest of London, was named in 1856 by surveyor A.P. Macdonald after the vale of Glen Coe in Argyllshire, Scotland. The Scottish glen was the site of a treacherous slaughter of Macdonalds in 1692." Regards and good hunting. Barb in Nova Scotia.
