I'm also a New Zealander. Kept getting the same result, Survey incomplete ????? so I gave up. Midge New Zealand
Dear Gordon, As a New Zealander with family links to Canada, I tried to fill in the survey. the site had an option for people overseas so I filled in other country, but the survey kept saying it was incomplete....so I clicked Ontario where my family link is AND THE SURVEY WAS COMPLETE. It didn't make sense! Well I tried!!! I like to support your effort as I think you do a great job Bobbie here in Upper Hutt, NZ. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon A. Hi... I also took--or tried--the survey and kept getting the "incomplete" message. After three tries, I gave up and I'm in the U.S. Louise
Hi Peggy, My name is Anthony. Just want to give you a tip in looking for land records in Bruce county. This was something that I just happened to stumble upon while searching my ancestors in Simcoe County. Go to www.google.ca and type in Bruce county map. Scroll down to "The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project - Map of Bruce County" (project being done by McGill University). Once map has appeared, scroll down to the bottom and click search. Once on the next screen click PEOPLE. Type in the surname you want to search as well as the other applicable fields. Hope this helps you. As well, because you know the name of the cemetery, you might want to try www.islandnet.com/ocfa/homepage.html . Hi Listers, I live in New Zealand and am presently researching my Grandmothers family from Aberdeen, Scotland. Maggie Ann Chalmers had a brother named JAMES CHALMERS who left Aberdeen for Canada around 1910. I have no idea as to which part of Canada. The only info I have regarding him is that he was a Chemist and his parents names were Mary Grant (and or) Gordon and James Chalmers. They married on 15 Dec. 1883. I think James was the eldest in the family. He had 2 sisters, Maggie Ann and Robina (Beenie). I have looked at a lot of shipping sites without finding him. I realize that it will be like finding a needle in a haystack but any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Cheers for now Midge New Zealand
Greetings all, I have some ancestors that are buried in Paisley Cemetery (and a couple who died there but have no stones apparently). What is the county seat of Bruce County? In other words - where do I look for land records (deeds, etc). thanks, Peggy
Hello, Having just found this list, thought I would try presenting my McMillan mystery and see if anyone has any suggestions as to where I can turn. Donald Mc Millan, per his military records was born in 1823 in either Inverness Scotland or Upper Canada, depends on what age his was when he was filling out the pension request. He is found having joined the USMC for the Mexican War aboard the USS Ohio out of Boston, MA. 1846 to 1850. He married in Brooklyn, NY in 1852. One of his children was born in Upper Canada, but was raised in Brooklyn. Another one of his children born and raised in Brooklyn, married Mary Kidner of Hamilton, in Hamilton May of 1875, returning to Brooklyn to live. This appears to me to mean he maintained a strong tie with the Upper Canada area all through his life. There is very little family history on him, as when he joined the Civil War in 1861, he left and never returned, he didn't die in the war he just never came back, ending his time in the Soldier's Home in Milwaukee, WI in 1892. My questions, 1. Would Upper Canada mean, the Hamilton, Ont. area? If not, fearfully asking, how big of an area is Upper Canada? 2. Does anyone have a Donald that fell off their tree that might tie in? <grin> 3. Is there an Inverness in Upper Canada? Thanking you in advance for any suggestions. Greetings All. In conjuction with the first symposium of the Canadian Genealogy Centre to be held this weekend (1,2 and 3 November 2002) in Gatineau, Quebec, a new website has been set up. Besides the 100 people from across Canada that will be attending the symposium, the Canadian Genealogy Centre seeks to widen participation in discussions relating to the new Centre. As such, they have posted on the CGC website an online survey designed to gather input from members of the genealogy and family history community of interests, on the issues that will be discussed during the sessions at the symposium. The website to access this survey is http://cgc-ccg.archives.ca . You are asked to view a slide presentation prior to filling out the survey. The slide presentation is intended to inform you some of what is envisioned for the CGC. The slide show and the survey are available in both official languages. While it is obviously short notice, organizers of the symposium would like to have preliminary results of the survey to inform those attending the symposium. Your participation by completing the survey will assist in deterrmining the direction that the Canadian Genealogy Centre will take. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Alexander & Mary Ann Mclean Children Christina Jane (my great grandmother -married William Young** from England 1876 in Newfoundland) Norman Henry Sarah Ann Peter This family arrived in Newfounland, Canada between 1875 - 1876 and left Newfoundland in 1880?? for parts unknown. **Children of Christina and William Norman Henry Cordelia Greenwood George William Helena (my grandmother) Christina died in 1890 during childbirth. Afterwards, William Young placed all 4 children with local families and left for places unknown.
My g-g-grandfather Alexander Roy McLennan lived in the Beechridge area (outside St Urbain PQ, south of Montreal) from 1838-1888 (other than a few years in the 1840's when he had moved to present day Ontario). In 1854 the settlers on French Seigneuries were allowed to buy the land they lived on. One of those was an Alexander McLennan living on the Third Concession in Williamstown. However I'm not sure if he is my Alex. As the buyers in the Third Concession were listed by their lot numbers then it follows that the nearest lot numbers should have been neighbors. I have found my Alex in the 1851 Canadian Census but recorded only his information, not his neighbors. I was hoping that someone with access to the 1851 census could list the five heads of household before and after him. If they match up with the 1854 list I could be fairly assured I had the right Alex. My 1851 census information is as follows: Reel 182, Beauharnois County, St Urbain Parish, District #14, Line 28-Alexander McLennan, age 35. Wife-Jane McEwen (a corrupted McCrone), age 32, and six children, Duncan, John, Ewen, Alexander, Phillip and Farquhar. Thanks, Larry McLennan
Hello List, There is a Scottish quiz out in a brand new web page that went on line last week...it is not a research site, but a place of Scottish topics, quite interesting for anyone who is.....or has a Scot's, or background. http://theblether.users.btopenworld.com/index.html Take a look! Christine
Greetings All I have just finished collating the petitions for the House of Commons that I have received since 23 February 2002. The break down is as follows: Province Previous Current Total ============================== BC 2724 162 2886 AB 5422 348 5770 SK 840 236 1076 MB 447 26 473 ON 2950 922 3872 PQ 807 178 985 NB 541 30 571 NS 745 269 1014 PE 99 0 99 NF 260 0 260 YT 7 0 7 NT 0 0 0 NUN 0 0 0 =============================== Totals 14842 2171 17013 I will be presenting these 2171 signatures to MP Murray Calder while I am in the Ottawa area to attend the first symposium for the Canadian Genealogy Center at the end of the month. Senator Lorna Milne has, as of 8 October 2002, presented 20,109+ Canadian and Non-Resident signatures on petitions to the Senate since the election of November 2000. Prior to the election she had presented more than 6000 signatures. This brings the total number of signatures on our petitions alone, since the November 2000 federal election, to 37,122+ Add to this figure the estimated 16,000 signatures on petitions, letters and email to MPs, and submissions to the Expert Panel on Access of Historical Census Records sent prior to the election of November 2000, we achieve a total of 59,122+ signatures sent to Ottawa. This figure does not include additional unknown numbers of signatures on letters and email sent prior to, or following the November 2000 election, or on petitions not directed through either myself or Muriel before or since that election. Neither does it include signatures on petitions that may have been sent by groups other than the Canada Census Committee. We have no means of tracking numbers of letters or email sent. The announcement on 3 October 2002 that the government intends to bring down legislation relating to public access of Historic Census records does not mean that our efforts are finished. It remains to be seen if such legislation will meet the needs and concerns of those seeking such access. We must keep on top of things to ensure that it does.. We continue to have a need for signatures on petitions. Without knowing the numbers of letters and email sent to individual MPs and Senators, signatures on petitions are the only thing we can point to to show support for our objective. PLEASE send your petitions through Muriel and myself. We are aware of petitions that have been sent directly to some MPs and Senators that have not been presented to their respective Houses. Signatures on these petitions are lost to us. Petitions sent through us are assured of being presented. We need also, to continue seeking support from those MPs and Senators that have given non-committal responses or who have not responded to our questions. Check the Scoreboards on the Post 1901 Census Project website, at the URL following my signature for the tally of MPs and Senators, and their stated positions. With the award today, of a gold tick of support to MP Joe Jordan, 165 MPs have to date stated their support for access to these records so vital to the interests of genealogists and historians. 37 Senators have similarly shown their support. If your own MP or Senator is one of those who do not currently have a gold tick of support, send them a brief, polite request for that support. Remind them that what we seek is public access to Census Records after 1901 on exactly the same basis as we currently have for 235 years of Census records up to 1901. Happy Hunting Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm
Greetings all. On Tuesday 8 October Senator Lorna Milne presented to the Senate petitions containing 940 signatures seeking to regain public access to Historic Census records. In presenting these petitions she made the following statement: ============================== Hon. Lorna Milne: Honourable senators, once again, I have the honour to present petitions. This time these petitions bear the signatures of 940 Canadians in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, who are researching their ancestry and who are petitioning the following: Your petitioners call upon Parliament to take whatever steps necessary to retroactively amend the confidentiality privacy clauses of statistics acts since 1906, to allow release to the public, after a reasonable period of time, of post-1901 census reports starting with the 1906 census. I have now presented petitions with 19,169 signatures to the First Session of the 37th Parliament, petitions with over 6,000 signatures to the 36th Parliament, and petitions with 940 signatures to the Second Session of the 37th Parliament. All of these petitions call for immediate action on this very important matter of Canadian history. ============================== Our efforts are not yet over. We still have a need for further signatures on petitions and letters to our elected and appointed representatives. We ask at this time that letters seeking support be restricted to your own MPs and Senators. Please check the Scoreboards at the Post 1901 Census Project website (at the URL following my signature) for the position of your MP or Senator BEFORE writing to them to ensure your letter reflects their position. As usual, I would appreciate receiving copies of any responses you might receive, particularly if they differ from the position shown on the Scoreboards, so that I might keep the Scoreboards up to date. Even though on 3 October 2002 Liberal House Leader, the Hon. Don Boudria, announced to the Ottawa Press Club that the government's fall legislative agenda would include legislation to deal with the concerns of those seeking to regain public access to Historic Census records, it remains to be seen if that legislation will truly meet our concerns and expectations. It has been made abundantly clear, on numerous occasions, that what we seek is exactly the same access to Census records after 1901 that we currently have for records up to and including 1901. I have twice written Industry Minister Allan Rock, advising that I would be attending the first symposium of the Canadian Genealogy Centre. I indicated that while there I would be happy to meet with him, at his pleasure, to discuss the Census issue with him. To date I have received no acknowledgement of my correspondence and think it unlikely that he will take me up on my offer. That offer remains open. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Watts gordon_watts@telus.net Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Port Coquitlam, BC http://globalgenealogy.com/Census en français http://globalgenealogy.com/Census/Index_f.htm Permission to forward without notice is granted.
