FYI: Hi, I found this at National Archives...for those of you who think that all Canadian Censuses were enumerated on Mar 31st or Apr 1st, think again!!! These are the dates that people are told to give their age in reference to regardless of when they were actually asked the question. The question for most seems to be posed like this..."How old will you be on April 4, 1881?"...even though they may have been 62 on April 5th and they responded on May 1st, they are supposed to respond 61 since that is how old they were on April 4th. ***************Dates of Census enumerations**************** In most cases, the following list indicates the official enumeration dates for the various census returns. The actual enumeration of the population took weeks or months. Enumerators were instructed to record the information on the census returns as it existed on the official enumeration date. 1825 — Lower Canada (Quebec) taken from 20 June to 20 September 1825 1831 — Lower Canada (Quebec) taken from 1 June to 1 October 1831 1842 — Canada West (Ontario) returns were supposed to be completed by 1 February 1842 1851 — 12 January 1852 (delays led to the late enumeration of the 1851 census) 1861 — 14 January 1861 1871 — 2 April 1871 1881 — 4 April 1881 1891 — 6 April 1891 1901 — 31 March 1901 *********************************************************** Donna Alden-Bugden WinnipegEmerg*REMOVE*@hotmail.com Remove the *REMOVE* part before e-mailing me Emergency Nurse ************************************************************

Jane, Thank you. That's most likely what happened with mine but then mine were here way before the famine, etc. so I was wondering if they might have come in through Canada. Hi list, I'm looking into the possibility that my PATTERSONs came to the USA, around or before 1800, through Canada. My mom and grandmother always said we had a lot of Scot in us. Would be interested to know if anyone with a Patterson or Paterson might have had relatives that came this way. David advises me there is an area in Scotland that bears the name my ggg grandfather carried - ALMOND (Patterson). Would love to hear from anyone with any information or suggestions. Sherry, very interesting information about "your" Orrs. Now, I can't say I can see a connection to mine - as yet - but who knows? This sort of situation is why I am glad to have a "shelf" to place this sort of thing on - somewhere I can get back to whenever the particular topic arises. Then I'm primed. I know we can all go to List Archives, but that only tells half the story. I would be really interested to be able to go back from the generations you mention. David. I am researching Archibald MCGILL and Marion COOK/MCCOOK who moved from Largieside on the Kintyre peninsula of Scotland to Ormstown in Chateauguay County Quebec. I have been unable to trace several of their offspring. Margaret (b. 8/25/1836) who married a James McKay and lived in Montreal. She died there on 5/27/1889. I don't know if she had any children, or anything else about her. Marion (b. 2/14/1883) who married a man named Hector McNeil. The had a daughter named Grace who died as an infant. They moved to Manitoba shortly after that, somewhere in Selkirk County. I don't know if they had any more children, or what happened to any of them. Elizabeth (b. 8/21/1846) who married a man named James Parker. In 1894, they were living in York County, Ontario. I know nothing else about her. David (b. 2/10/1849) seems to never have been married. He either homesteaded in Saskatchewan or Manitoba, or he ran a men's haberdashery in Montreal. He may also have done both sequentially. Bruce
All of this talk about ORR got me to thinking of the 3 sisters that we have in our family tree. I should say that 2 are defenitly sisters and 1 is 99.9% probability. This is why I'm pretty sure that she was the 3rd sister..... Helimina must be "Minnie". N. Campbell ORR SLATER/SLADER would have been born about 1868. Anyway, there are the Orr's that I know of so if you come across any of them please let me know. Thanks, Sherry
If I told you the knees were wooden and just put on for the occasion, would you believe me? Ha! Well my Elizabeth and John were married in Dalry/Kilbirnie so getting close to Glasgow in fact. Perhaps you'd just like to sign up? Only take a moment! May be quite useful to you - and then there's k-n-e-e-s! David. Jan, I meant to mention, there's a family from Hamilton who have a restaurant near Ottawa called the Glen. They do wonderful food there and especially HAGGIS!!! Their surname escapes me just now, but if I beat my memory/brain into submission, maybe the name will pop out! David. Hi Jan, my Orr was Elizabeth from Ayrshire, Scotland who married John Craig and came to Canada - New Brunswick - in 1842. She is supposed to have had at least a sister here in Canada but I have no firm information. (Many!) yaers ago, I was at school very near Lochmaben which is close to Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, and I've passed by Hamilton (outskirts of Glasgow) more times than I can count. I intend trying to keep some kind of log of this sort of information on the Site I messaged this List about - http://groups.msn.com/ScotsinCanada/_homepage.msnw for some names - like Orr (which aren't the most common) keep cropping up. David.
