Linda, hullo. I suppose my "short answer" to whether it is worth posting is that the more that goes on, the more it becomes worthwhile, so I would encourage you to do so. I termed the site a resource centre. I therefore see it as a place for people to visit, add to and extract from. As it grows (and it is growing), it becomes more valid, so please, become part of that community - you never know but it may pay off. Thanks, David. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Grstmll@aol.com> To: <SCOTS-IN-CANADA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2002 8:30 AM Subject: [SCTCDN] McMillan > Hello, > The web site is fabulous, along with all the information that it > presents. Hello, The web site is fabulous, along with all the information that it presents. But I have so little on my illusive and unique Donald McMillan was not sure if posting was worthwhile. What I have of Donald is gathered from family lore, his Civil War pensions and census records. Donald joined the Civil War in the States and as far as I can tell never looked back. I know that he was living outside of Canada in 1849 as he enlisted in the US Marines and served aboard the USS Ohio 1849 to 1850 in the Mexican War. In 1852 he married Mary Wallace in Brooklyn, NY,(I think) one or two of their children per the census, were born in Upper Canada, the others were born in Brooklyn. It appears they alternated living between Brooklyn and that area. When he joined the Civil War, each time he was discharged, he would reenlist in another unit. He and his wife apparently began listing themselves as widowed around 1880, this even though they both died in 1893. 1875, his son William Wallace married Mary Kidner in Hamilton, Ontario, which is the only "place" that is ever given. After their marriage, they too settled in Brooklyn. Donald died at the Soldier's Home in Milwaukee, WI in 1893. So, guess what I am looking for is a family that has misplaced a gentleman that loved to travel, and enjoyed wars! Please keep up all the work on your site it is super. Sherry. There are times when the government websites, like all others, are inaccessible. There could be a variety of reasons for this, including problems on the net, or the server may have been shut down for upgrading, etc. I had problems yesterday reaching the 1901 Census website but as I write this I have been able now to open the search page it. The best advice for anyone experiencing problems accessing any website is to leave it for awhile and try later. Chances are that whatever problems were occuring will have been cleared up. Greetings All. We often receive complaints from people attempting to download petitions from the Post-1901 Census Project website that they have difficulty in doing so. The petitions are in PDF format and some people seem to have problems with this format. I hope that the information I provide here will assist those having problems downloading PDF files (not just our petitions). First of all, to open and read PDF files you require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program that is downloadable from http://www.adobe.com/ After downloading and installing the Acrobat reader you should be able to download and read PDF files with no problem. If you still have problems, however, it may be due to the configuration of your web browser. Adobe has information on their website for properly configuring Netscape and Internet Explorer to work with PDF files. Access this information at http://www.adobe.com/support/readguide.html Choose your operating system. Choose "Configuring a Web browser for Reader", and click "Submit". The resultant pages have information for configuring Netscape and Internet Explorer to work with Reader. Hope this helps. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Good morning, A discussion on another List got me thinking about the history of immigration to the USA (or "13 Colonies"). While doing a search at www.google.com I came across this web page: http://www.siliconglen.com/scotfaq/11_24.html I have still not found the web site I was looking for, but I did find one web page which stated that after the first World War (1914-1918), the "free immigration" to the USA was stopped. And, I think this is when "Ellis Island" came to be. Because of my belonging to the "British Home Children List," I found out that Great Britain (United Kingdom) .. was shipping their "unwanted adults" and "unwanted children" (separately, not families) .. out to their many Colonies .. right from the early 1600's and they kept it up until the mid-1900's. Well over 300 years of .. (permanently) shipping people off their Islands - for .. what I understand .. MANY reasons! Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. My ancestors coming from either Ireland or Scotland: KERR, HENDERSON, HANNAH, RITCHIE, etc. The people whom I think are my ancestors .. through Adoption of my grandmother (by her grandparents??): DEXTER, CLARK, MANCHESTER (99% of my ancestors came from somewhere in the UK) "There are two lasting bequests we can give our children; one is roots, the other is wings." Hi all.. : ) Searching for info on John William BUDGE - Wick Caithness to Stanstead QC, and Elsie MURRAY - Aberdeenshire to Stanstead QC, probably in the early 1900's.
