    1. [SCTCDN] Nathaniel and Mary (GREENLAW) FENLASON in St. Stephen, 1800-1830 ??
    2. BBFFRRPP
    3. Hello, I have made a "guess" that the wife of my ancestor, Calvin KIDDER, remarried after Calvin's unexpected death (at sea) in Feb. 1799. According to the Kirk-McColl records (people told me about), Calvin married Mary Mercy GREENLAW in July 1798 in St. Stephen, NB (or St. Andrews, NB). At the end of Jan. 1799, they had a son born to them. His name was J. Calvin KIDDER and he was baptised in the spring .. in St. Stephen, NB (or St. Andrews, NB). And, unfortunately, that is the last anything is seen of him .. until he reaches 18. And, the widow, Mrs. Mary KIDDER .. "disappeared into thin air" in 1799. I have found out that in June 1803, possibly in Alexander, ME, (or in St. Andrews or St. Stephen, NB), Nathaniel FENLASON married a Mary GREENLAW (?). They had their children born to them while living in St. Stephen, NB. According to one FTM web page, Henry, Harriet, Jedidiah, Charles, Loiza, Lucy, Jane and Nathaniel, were born between 1814 and 1825 ?? (I am providing this information from different web sites which people have told me about and from information provided to me by Listers.) But, I am curious about these dates. If Nathaniel and Mary were married in 1803, why did they have no children born to them between 1804 and 1814? And, coincidentally, J. Calvin KIDDER would have turned 18 .. in early 1817 .. right around the time that his step-siblings were starting to be born. (IF my "assumption" is correct) And, also in regards to J. Calvin (either Joseph or James Calvin, depending on which records one reads), .. as far as I can tell, he does not show up .. on any Census .. until he is 30 years old. ... I know that Census information along the ME/NB border pre-1830 .. is not really available. But, I am curious why J. Calvin or Calvin KIDDER does not show up in .. someone's ... Household .. between 1800 and 1830. Researchers state that this Mary GREENLAW was the daughter of Charles GREENLAW and Mercy (HAWTHORN) JAMESON, who lived both in Deer Isle, ME, and St. Andrews, NB. (Mary born in the 1770's or 1780's, probably in ME, possibly in St. Andrews) And, researchers state that Nathaniel FENLASON was the son of Wallace FENLASON of Machias, ME, and Nathaniel was born there in 1775. (I am told that in different records this surname is spelled either: FENLASON, FINLAYSON, or FENDERSON, sometimes for the same family.) (I am told that Charles GREENLAW was one of four GREENLAW men who migrated from Scotland to the USA and first settled in Maine. Reportedly, they migrated to New Brunswick during the 1780's. These four men seem to have been born in Scotland in the 1740's.) For Nathaniel and Mary FENLASON, at some point they moved to Crawford, ME. Nathaniel died there at Age 63, and Mary died there at Age 70, and they are both buried in the FENLASON Cemetery there. All of the above information is a summary of the information I have been provided in e-mails .. during the past week. So, other researchers might disagree .. on the information, dependent on their own research. My main question is: If anyone has access to the "marriage records" for both northern Maine and Charlotte County, NB, around 1800 .. I'd like to know if anyone has ever come across .. the marriage of Nathaniel FENLASON in June 1803, or anytime between 1803 and 1813. One researcher has told me that the records show he married Mary GREENLAW, and another researcher told me that Mary's surname .. is not found in the records .. leaving it ..open .. for discussion. Thank you for your time. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. My ancestors were: Calvin KIDDER (1765-1799) and his (only??) son, J. Calvin KIDDER (1799-1891). J = Joseph or James; one of his sons was named, James Calvin KIDDER, Jr., but the "Kidder book" lists him as Joseph Calvin Kidder. And, documents in St. Stephen, NB, refer to him only as Calvin KIDDER. And, the book "Early Princeton, ME" lists him as Calvin KIDDER. "Calvin" Kidder had strong ties to several towns: St. Stephen, NB, Calais, ME, Amity, ME, and Princeton, ME, where most of his children settled. "There are two lasting bequests we can give our children; one is roots, the other is wings." Hodding Carter, Jr.

    1. [SCTCDN] Post 1901 Census - Press release of Prof. Bill Waiser
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All On 11 December 2002 Information Commissioner John M. Reid finally gave his long-awaited response to Professor Bill Waiser's complaint regarding Statistics Canada's refusal to grant access to the 1906 Special Census of the Western Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). Professor Waiser's complaint had been received by the Information Commissioner's office 3 November 2000. The letter sent to Professor Waiser included an apology for the long delay in providing a response to his complaint. In a nutshell, Mr. Reid found that access to the withheld records was authorized pursuant to paragraph 19(2)(d) of the Access to Information Act by reference to subsection 8(3) of the Privacy Act and s.6(d) of the Privacy Regulations. On 25 June 2002 he wrote to the to the Chief Statistician of Canada, Dr. Ivan P. Fellegi, stating that "In my view, the prevailing law required that the 1906 census records be transferred to the Dominion Archives. If the law had been obeyed, the provisions I have referred to above would require disclosure. That, in my view, is what Parliament intended." Elsewhere he stated "...there is support for the view of the complainant, and, I might add, of the Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records, that there is no restriction or prohibition on the transfer of these records to the National Archives nor for subsequent release to the public." Mr. Reid sought written representations in this matter from the Chief Statistician. Mr. Fellegi declined to submit such representations. On 18 October 2002 Mr. Reid wrote to Dr. Fellegi once again, on behalf of a further 30 complainants who had been refused access to the 1906 Census records. He found that all of these complaints were well founded and recommended to the Chief Statistician "that the records at issue be disclosed, in their entirety, forthwith." On 1 November 2002 Dr. Fellegi advised the Information Commissioner that "he does not intend to follow [his] recommendation.". At 10:00 AM (Saskatchewan time) Wednesday 18 December 2002, Professor Bill Waiser held a press conference, relating to the Information Commissioner's report, at the University of Saskatchewan. The larger part of his press release has been published on page A21 of the Wednesday Globe and Mail so I will not repeat it here. It can be accessed online at http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/PEstory/TGAM/20021218/CO1906 /Comment/comment/comment_temp/2/2/3/ (The URL is too long for one line so be sure to copy and paste the full URL into your web browser) The full text of Professor Waiser's Press Release will be posted on the Post 1901 Census Project website by Saturday. A further article relating to the Census issue was published on page A11 of the Globe and Mail. It can be accessed on line at http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/PEstory/TGAM/20021218/UCENSN /national/national/nationalTheNationHeadline_temp/7/7/25/ (Use cut and paste again) My thanks to Leland Harvie for providing the URLs for these articles. 3. There is a book titled KILMARTIN PIONEERS, 1815-1855 by Dugald Kenneth MacKellar that documents many of the Argyll Scots who came to live in Mosa & Ekfrid townships. At a quick glance in my copy, I'm not seeing the exact combinations of names you mention below. I don't have a lot of time right now, but will look more carefully later. If you want to e-mail me directly with as much information you have--and your degree of certainty--I'll be happy to check for you. D. 3. Thank you so much for your offer. Unfortunately, at this time, what I wrote is about as much as I have for my McKellar's. Where would one obtain a copy of 'Kilmartin Pioneers, 1815-1855'? Is it easily ordered? This is a busy time for everyone and your offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks again. 3. Season's Greetings! Just received a message from another board who suggested my gg-grandmother, Mary McKELLAR, was a descendant of those McKellar's who emigrated from Argyle, Scotland before 1833 to Middlesex County, Ontario. At the terrific Kilmartin Cemetary site, it had the McKellar settlers separated into (I'm guessing) McKellar families by the place in Argyle they originated. It suggested my McKellar.s were from Kilblaan. One of the researchers named was David McKellar from Ontario, but a message to him was returned. It would be wonderful to get in contact with David or anyone else interested in this area. Mary McKellar, Born Scotland circa 1815 - was told her first language was gaelic. - Her mother's first name was probably Isabella. - married John McCALLUM, 1833 Aldboro, Ontario by the Rev. Dugald Campbell, Baptist minister. - 1851 Census...Mary lived in Ekfrid Twp. with her husband, children, and John and Mary McCALLUM, sr. (Mary's in-laws or her husband's grandparents) - The whole family is listed as Baptist. Children: Donald, Alexander, Margaret, Neil, Isabella, and Catherine. All born in the 1830/40's in Ontario. Best Wishes, Jan Corriveau Suggested ancestors of Mary......................... Father: Malcolm McKellar, born 1779 Mother: Isobel Walker married 1804, Rothesay, Isle of Bute Grandfather: Duncan McKellar born 1748, Kilblaan Grandmother: Mary McKellar

    3. Greetings All. My thanks to all who have forwarded to me the message relating to Professor Bill Waiser's response from the Information Commissioner to his complaint regarding Statistics Canada's refusal to grant access to the 1906 Special Western Census. I have been in contact with Professor Waiser who will be providing me with a copy of his press release. I will be able to post this after his press conference Wednesday morning. I am advised that others who complained to the Information Commissioner regarding this matter are now receiving their responses as well. I expect that mine will be waiting for me on my return home at the end of the week. I would request that all those who receive a response from the Information Commissioner regarding their complaint on this matter to please send copies of those responses to me. I will be putting them all together and submitting copies of them to our lawyer, Lois Sparling. They may well play a part in our current legal action. Copies of these responses may be sent to me at 1455 Delia Drive Port Coquitlam, BC V3C 2V9 Alternately, they may be faxed to me at 604-942-6843. In this instance, however, I would prefer to receive photocopies in the mail. I would request also that those receiving responses from the Information Commissioner complete and return the forms that accompany the response, giving the Information Commissioner authourity to proceed to the Federal Court on their behalf. At this time I would not recommend proceeding individually because of the cost involved. If the Information Commissioner proceeds on our behalf, the cost is to the government, not ourselves. "Wee Hell" was one son of : John RAMSAY, b. 24 Dec 1810, Kingsbarns, Fifeshire d. 1 Dec 1871, Ragfield, Crail, Fifeshire, m. 4 Feb 1843, Srail, Fifeshire, to: Catherine MORRIS b. 27 Jun 1814, Kingsbarns, Fifeshire d. 6 Oct 1905, St. Andrews, Fifeshire John RAMSAY was a son of: John RAMSAY b. about 1764, Fifeshire d. (?) m. 16 Mar 1810, Kingsbarns, Fifeshire, to Jean LESLIE b. 12 May 1771, St. Andrews & St. Leonards, Fife, d. 25 Jul 1852, Kingsbarns, Fife. More of my lineage is posted at Who we are, on Scots In Canada. If you run into a bunch of RAMSAY's in the Montreal area, they'll likely be kin of my Third cousin Andrea Mascis who is a descendant of David RAMSAY one of "Wee Hell's" brothers. RAMSAY's in the Kingston or Toronto areas could be mine. I'll look up the addresses where James was known to be and post them later. TTFN, Hedgehog ----- Original Message ----- From: Shirley Kerr To: hedgehog1@telus.net Sent: Sunday, December 08, 2002 6:43 PM Subject: Ramsay I have been looking into your James Ramsay and found some that were born in Fifeshire, but none in 1885. Is this a solid date for his birth. Do you know either of his parents names? Did all of the brothers and sisters stay in Toronto area? Do you know the year of birth for William? I am doing some "search in" on some of the names in ScotsinCanada and helped some, others I am stopped, but with as many childrens first names as you list, some should be found. Any dates on there births and if they were born in Scotland or Canada? If I am being a pain in the neck, just tell me and I will back off. 1. [SCTCDN] How do I get an Ontario birth certificate???
    2. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on how I can obtain a birth certificate for my grandfather, who was born in Ontario in 1916. It seems that the the Canadian government makes it virtually impossible to obtain such a certificate without a "guarantor," which I do not have. Without knowing my great-grandparents' names, my family search is at a standstill. I would love to see my grandfather's birth certificate, but it seems like it does not exist! I cannot find a record of his birth on familysearch.org or any other website. Could anyone offer me some suggestions on where to go from here? My grandfather's parents were from Denny and Dundee and I would love to know more about them, but without their names, I don't know what to do. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    2. David M Paterson
    3. Since my last message about the Resource Centre, a few new members have joined this List and it's only fair to briefly update them. I set up an MSN Community Site (url below) to allow members the opportunity to post information but also to extract. The site is not an alternative to this list, but I feel complementary to it. A number from this list have already found it and are beginning to use it and find value in it. I am well supported by Christine (from this list) and a growing number of other enthusiasts. Please give it some consideration. The current site will be replaced by a more professional version as and when possible. To subscribe to the Community, you will need either a Hotmail Account or a Net Password. Thanks, David. http://groups.msn.com/ScotsinCanada This email was scanned with Norton Anti Virus 2002.
