Jean, I had the same problem the first time I tried. I un-activated (if that is a word) Java Script and went with Active-X and had no further trouble. With all of Canada's data locked away from anyone that is not immediately in the area of these large centres, wouldn't it be a wonderful service and employment idea for Canada to consider this type of system. We have so many "make work" projects for those that are unemployed for over a certain period of time. I believe that Canada still has the subsidized work programme that allows employers to hire someone that has been unemployed for ? time. Wouldn't it be wonderful and the government used their own programme to create databases of information for online access? The following is from Ireland. The Irish Emigration Database (IED) Belfast The Database Project in Belfast, which is linked to the Centre, is based at 4 The Mount, Belfast. Trainees who work for the project are recruited through three agencies namely Enterprise Ulster, Hugh J O ' Boyle and Bryson House. The former are required to be unemployed for six months and may come through the New Deal or Work Track which are government training schemes for the unemployed. Due to government legislation they are only permitted to stay on the project from six weeks to six months. Trainees collect information in various archives in Belfast - The Public Record Office and The Central and Linenhall Libraries. The type of information collected is relevant to Irish emigration to America and Canada, for example, emigrant letters, newspaper articles, government reports etc. This information is either typed or scanned and then programmed for entry to the Database. Anyone interested in joining the Belfast Project should contact Lorraine Tennant - (028) 9045 2250 or lorrainetennant@btconnect.com ......IED Belfast website scots-in-canada-d-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > Subject: > > SCOTS-IN-CANADA-D Digest Volume 03 : Issue 21 > > Today's Topics: > #1 Re: [SCTCDN] Post 1901Census - Rep ["Gordon A. Greetings All. In the past few days there seems to have been a resurgence of warnings posted on various mail lists about supposed viruses circulating on the net. The most recent has again been warning about a file named jdbgmgr.exe that you are advised is a virus and it should be deleted. This message seems to raise its ugly head every few months. This particular virus warning has been well documented and is well known to be a HOAX. Anyone deleting the file indicated will lose a legitimate file that is loaded when Windows is installed. The idiots that dream up these HOAX messages like nothing better than to see their messages proliferate and take up untold amounts of Internet bandwidth. They depend upon people, not knowing any better, and in most cases very well meaning, passing the message on to everyone they have in their email address book. In most cases I have found I receive more HOAX messages than my anti-virus program catches. PLEASE people, before passing on ANY virus warning message that you might receive, CHECK IT OUT on one of the many Anti-Virus and Hoax advisory websites. Most producers of Anti-Virus software have such websites and they are easy to find. The best defence against receiving a virus is to use a reputable anti-virus program, and to keep its signature files updated on a regular basis. This day and age, no-one should be accessing the Internet without being protected by anti-virus software. If you feel you cannot afford to purchase anti-virus software, there are a number of very good FREE programs available online. Grisoft is one that I see frequently used. Do regular scans of your drives to ensure that you have not been infected. Those using high-speed connections, in particular, should be using firewalls for added protection. Firewalls can be either software, or hardware when routers are used for home networking. Viruses and worms can be introduced to your system by means other than email. Windows users should also install the frequent free Windows Updates offered by Microsoft. These mostly add patches to the system to block or close known or newly discovered problems in the operatiing system. Sometimes they add features to your system. Again, PLEASE CHECK OUT ANY VIRUS WARNINGS BEFORE PASSING THEM ON! If you discover them to be HOAXES, and in most cases you will, advise those from whom you have received them so that they in turn can advise those to whom they sent the original message. If everone follows this procedure, we will cut down drastically on the number of false virus warnings. Have a great day! Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Hi Colin. The Official in question, Dr. Ivan P. Fellegi, is still gainfully employed as Chief Statistician of Canada. I do not imagine he is a 'happy camper' these days. Greetings All. Greetings All. Since our announcement this morning regarding the immediate release of 1906 Census records we have had a number of reports of people experiencing difficulty accessing the records. We can only assume from reports received that the number of people attempting to access the records could be swamping the website. Considering the number of subscribers to the Global Gazette, and the number of mail lists to which Muriel and I post directly, a conservative estimate of the numbers that have known about the website since shortly after it opened this morning would be 40,000 people. Add to this the readers of mail lists to which others forward our posts, and you could have a great many people trying to get access at the same time. We suggest that if you experience difficulty accessing the 1906 records, just wait awhile, or wait until tomorrow, and try again. Traffic at the website is likely to be very heavy, at least for the next few days. We have been waiting for this access for a long time. A day or two more won't hurt. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. Greetings All. "Genealogists, historians, and researchers across the country won a major victory today as Industry Minister Allan Rock announced the immediate release of the nominal records from the 1906 census. Ontario Senator Lorna Milne (Liberal -- Peel Region) welcomed the news." So reads the opening paragraph of a News Release issued today, 24 January 2003, by Senator Lorna Milne. The full text of Senator Milne's News Release, and other pertinent News Releases, can be found on the Post 1901 Census Project website at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census The announced release of the 1906 Special Census of the Western Provinces is indeed a major victory for genealogists and historians who have been actively campaigning for this for the past five years. It is felt that release of the 1906 Census will lead the way for the eventual release of the 1911 and subsequent Censuses of Canada. We are grateful to Industry Minister Allan Rock for recognizing what is right and proper, and doing what legally should have been done in 1998. We are pleased that the Minister has released the 1906 records in full, and without restrictions, on the same basis as 1901 and earlier records have been available. We are grateful also to MP Murray Calder, and especially to Senator Lorna Milne for the effort they have put in for us to reach this point in our campaign. We have won a major battle, but the war is not yet over. We have yet to deal with expected legislation that must ensure the orderly and continued release of Historic Census records, after the legislated period of closure. We expect that legislation to be brought down shortly after Parliament resumes sitting at the end of January. We trust Minister Rock, in drafting the legislation, to remember that what we seek is the same unrestricted access to records after, now 1906, that is currently available for records up to then. Hi List; Could SKS look-up the following person for me on the above census; a) Ellen (Helen) Chalmers (mother) b) Bessie (Betsy) Chalmers (daughter) In 1901 they were in Moosomin, District of Assiniboia, NWT having arrived in Canada in 1891. I believe they may have been in Moosomin in 1891 ( this is only a guess on my part). Also, as of what date was the 1891 census taken? This may help narrow down my search of the shipping lists. Ellen and Bessie are my wife's great-grandmother and grandmother respectively. Many thanks in advance for your help. Malcolm in Calgary, Alberta
