    3. In a book I own "American Loyalist Claims" a few Loyalists are listed. Here is what it says about a Donald Ross: "Ross,Donald, Tryon Co., N.Y., deceased, by widow, now Christian (X) Cameron. Memorial, now of Montreal, updated. Claim: House and nine acres; expenses of getting to Canada. (A013/11/C1)." --------------------------------------- Under AO13 the definition is: Original papers supporting each claim are contained in 141 boxes and bundles under this reference. They include memorials by the claimant or his representatives; affidavits, certificates, and depositions as to his conduct during the war; originals or copies of property deeds, family wills, and administrations; descriptions and valuations of real and personal property; copies of proceedings taken by American Revolutionary Committees against the claimant; personal correspondence; and reams of miscellaneous material, from sketch maps and plans of estates to ledgers and trading accounts. Microfilms of AO13 are available at the Public Archives, Ottawa, Canada, and at the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, the latterbeing available through interlibrary loan systems. Bundle numbers should be addressed to the Chief, Loan Division., Library of Congress, Washington, DC20504. Donald was a Loyalist during the American Revolutionary war and it appears he may have come to America with a Highland regiment sometime during the war. According to township records, he was granted land in Guysborough, Nova Scotia in 1783 following his evacuation from the New York area. He may have come to Guysborough with the Port Roseway group. The National Archives is a good source of data and so is the Ontario Archives. You can also try to obtain copies of the death certificates in Ontario. 3. Below is a small explanation of what the Empire Settlement Act was, perhaps you should try the Canadian Archives for information on your grandmother, follow the section that is marked genealogy. www.archives.ca Christine Still experiencing serious economic and social difficulties after World War I, the British government hoped to alleviate some of its troubles by promoting emigration. The Empire Settlement Act committed Britain to coordinate and subsidize settlement programs with the Government of Canada and other immigration organizations. As a result, settlement arrangements such as the 3,000 Families Scheme, soldier settlement schemes and the efforts of the Catholic Scottish Immigrant Aid Society helped to make Britons the largest migrant group in Alberta in the 1920s. Intended primarily to put British migrants on Canadian farms, the settlement tactics, nevertheless, resulted in only a small number of British farmers, as most eventually made their way to the towns and cities. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doreen Newton" <geokylie@msn.com> To: <SCOTS-IN-CANADA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2003 2:37 PM Subject: [SCTCDN] Long Lost Grandmother > My Grandmother emigrated to Canada in 1926 from SCOTLAND, leaving behind my > dad who was only 3years old..He never heard from her again. > Her name was CATHERINE BROWN..Born 1900..in AIRDRIE..SCOTLAND > I am trying to trace her and have gained nothing in all the years I have > been researching. > All I know is that she gave her address on the ship manifest as the TORONTO > HOSTEL..Her passage was paid for by the EMPIRE SETTLEMENT..which I dont know > very much about.. > Can anyone help as to where or how I can try and trace her. > Any help whatsoever would be very much appreciated. > Regards > Doreen > > _________________________________________________________________ > Get Hotmail on your mobile phone http://www.msn.co.uk/msnmobile > > > ==== SCOTS-IN-CANADA Mailing List ==== > Genealogists don't die, they just lose their census. > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

    3. Hello List, I have just join this list and would like to throw the surname of FERGUSON, William and his wife Anna (Jane). They had (to my knowledge) one daughter Jane Ferguson Dunne Sweeney, b. 1840 in Ontario... In all of the documents found, Jane states she is "Scottish" meaning her parents were Scotland born.. I have been searching in all the counties around Wellington where she married Thomas Dunn(e) sometime in 1857. Thomas was R. C. Does anyone have this FERGUSON family in their lines? 3. From: Janice R Freeman mcdade-dna@juno.com To: ALL McDADE Descendants Announcing: McDADE-DNA Project Visit: the Sept McDade Clan Davidson home page at mcdade.bravepages.com and go to the: McDade Surname DNA Project page under Table of Contents If you have questions, contact me at McDADE-DNA@juno.com You can read more about DNA Testing through the Links at mcdade.bravepages.com or FamilyTreeDNA.com. We are inviting Y O U to participate in our McDADE-DNA Project which we are expecting to be a valuable asset to our paper trail research to show how our various McDADE lines throughout the world may be connected thru : 1. your direct participation if you are a direct line McDADE male descendant (direct male in your McDADE line all the way back to your earliest known McDADE ancestor, including yourself) by participating in the DNA testing. OR 2. your indirect participation (because you are or became a male descendant of a McDADE daughter at some point in your McDADE line OR are a McDADE daughter) by finding the fathers, brothers, uncles, nephews, cousins that are direct line male McDADE descendants in your family and urging them to participate under 1. above. First, if it is at all possible, please participate in the 25 marker test as this gives us a much better analysis of the known, possible, or potential relationships. Each and every participant is an important link in connecting our various lines whether our ancestor was an early arrival in the 1600's or 1700's or a later arrival in the 1800's or 1900's in Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, USA, etc. Our ancestors may have come directly from Scotland or via Ireland, but with McDADE as the primary spelling, we are probably all cousins in one way or another. You may contact me at any time if you have questions. There is no medical connection with any of this, just a check on the male DNA markers that are passed father to son almost intact for many generations, with an occasional mutation. It is especially important to have a male participate (regardless of age) if the male is the only or one of two male McDADE descendants of a father, grandfather or great grandfather. Unfoutunately, the daughters can not do this for this particular easy, efficient, and economical test. I hope you will participate in the launching of this great project for our McDADE's everywhere. Please inform others you feel should be contacted or send me names, e-mail addresses, and or snail addresses and phone numbers for other McDADE kin. I can't wait to see how our markers reveal our potential relationships, especially if many of you will select the 25 plus marker DNA test. 2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Margaret. I have posted Instructions to Officers and Enumerators of Census for each Census of Canada (except 1881) from 1871 to 1941 on the Post 1901 Census Project Website at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/index.htm Scroll down the home page and click on 'Links'. On the next page scroll down and click on 'Instructions to Officers and Enumerators of Census'. On the next page, choose the year you want and click on the link for it. Alternately, the direct URL for the page with the Census year links is at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Ceninstruct.htm The Instruction files are in PDF format that requires the free Adobe Acrobat reader. Depending on the year, some of the files are quite large and on a dial up connection may take awhile to download. (The 1891 file is 27 pages) There may be the odd spelling error in the document due to misreading of my optical character recognition program, but other than that the documents are true to the original. I mention above that the Instructions for 1881 are not available. If anyone can advise me where I might find a copy of those Instructions I would appreciate it. I have been unable to find them in any of the libraries in my area. Happy Hunting. Gordon A.
