A while ago, I checked a few newspapers from around that time, but did not find anything. Then I forgot!! Just now, though, I might have found a break and started to use my brain. There is nothing in the article you have to say that SHE went to Expo - the band did! So I tried another tactic. I am not too bad with a search engine and I found a student who went there at that time and played in a rock band! So I e-mailed him on your behalf (long shot) to ask whether he or friends might know about her. Here is a site on the school. http://www.district13.on.ca/school_histories.htm Now, my brain is working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........Most likely, though, at 84, she would not be working! Duh. She might be in a retirement home near the school, though, vs. working!!!!! That band goes and plays at various Kinsmen events, so they probably played at the home. So I would be looking up retirement homes that were around in Durham near the Ajax High School in 1986. Since, she was a cook, these would likely be publicly funded ones, not expensive private homes. She obviously appreciated the event! Good for her. The government of Ontario would have records on retirement homes too. I forget where you live, but they would have records and would share them with a relative! Toronto phone books are available in Toronto libraries. If you are not in Toronto near a library, you might join the rootsweb list that covers the Durham area and request a library look-up. Scots-in-Canada has some Toronto people, but the Durham area would have many more. Or contact the local genealogical association for Ajax. Have you looked her up in the Ajax phone book for, say 1958, when you can be fairly sure she was working??? When I looked up "Kennedy House", I learned about how today, the place is kind of a rough place to work and has some union issues BUT, it is a government organization and she would have belonged to the union. Privacy concerns may preclude getting further information, as she was alive until recently (in genealogical terms), so you would have to tread lightly in asking for information, but as time goes on, those records will probably become available to you. They might confirm dates of employment or union membership. And Kennedy House may have staff photos or party information. http://www.opseu.org/news/Press2003/july102003.htm Good luck ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robyn Paterson" <robynpaterson@clear.net.nz> To: <SCOTS-IN-CANADA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2003 4:16 AM Subject: Re: [SCTCDN] Fw: Janet Wardrope > Hi Leslie, > Just wondering if you have had any chance with this?? > I have since established that she worked as a cook for a boys high school > but it may have been for a place called The Kennedy House in Ajax which was > a juvenile boys home I believe. > Regards Robyn > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Leslie" <lwgrauer@shaw.ca> > To: <SCOTS-IN-CANADA-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 4:49 PM > Subject: Re: [SCTCDN] Fw: Janet Wardrope > > > > Robyn: > > > > I live in Vancouver, B.C., so I will see what I can find, but way after > the > > March 31 - year end. Hi, Ajax is in the Municipality of Durham. Which is 20 minutes from Downtown Toronto. Try metroland publishers for the local papers. Also the various archives / libraries around Durham Region. Most people place their obits in the Toronto Papers - Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun Hope that helps. Hi I am hoping someone can help me. Janet Wardrope was born in Stirling Scotland abt 1902 and moved to Canada. She never married and died in Canada i believe about 1988 a few years after an article in a paper there. I have a photo copy of the articel which is a picture showing her thats from saturday 8 February 1986 press run titled and the beat goes on... Janet Wardrope 84 wails away on the skins, accompanied, left to right by Ajax High School Band members Andrea Donovan, Adrian Pleasants and Scott Coleman. The Band heading for expo 86 in Vancouver this summer, and recently staged a concert, sponsered by Ajax Kinsmen, here at home for area seniors. An Elderly member of the family who has a problem with memory recall has advised me that Janet was employed as a cook at a boys high school so i am wondering if it was this one. While employed as a cook Janet became a mother figure to a handicapped boy who later moved in with her at her flat where she looked after him until she died apparently. I am trying to find out details of the home this refers to and what happened to Janet Wardrope and if she appears on any census for canada. Any assistance any one can give me would be greatly appreciated. Robyn New Zealand --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Found this in google.com.....could it be the place in question? TORONTO, July 3 /CNW/ - The Ontario Public Service Employees Union is calling on Brenda Elliott, Ontario Minister of Community, Family and Children's Services, to take direct control over operation of a young offender facility in Ajax to deal with "a dangerous, chaotic crisis in management and governance" there. The 24-bed Rotherglen facility, dubbed "volatile and vulnerable" in a Ministry report, is operated by Kennedy House Youth Services, until recently the largest private operator of young offender facilities in Ontario. "Out of a staff of 35 front-line workers at Rotherglen, approximately 10 quit every two months," said OPSEU president Leah Casselman. "New workers, usually aged 19 to 21, normally work for several months before receiving any training at all in the correct use of restraints and the distribution of medications. Staff and offenders are routinely injured and always at risk of serious injury on a daily basis," she said. "Unless the Minister takes action, someone is going to get killed. It's only a matter of time." Calls to Ontario's Child Advocate from children and families who receive services from Kennedy House have skyrocketed, the Ministry report says. In 2000, the Advocate received 42 such calls; in the first five months of 2002, calls came in at an annual rate of 204. Thirty-five members of OPSEU have been on strike at Rotherglen since June 12 after Kennedy House refused to negotiate in good faith. Casselman said dysfunctional management was the root cause of the work stoppage. "The Ministry report shows an organization with no strategic plan, no system for keeping track of capital assets, irregular cheque writing, and little programming expertise," she said. "Kennedy House simply doesn't know how to run this kind of organization." The Ministry report noted frequent conflicts of interest at Kennedy House, stating that "a number of Directors have been paid for services to the organization through the years." For example, Board Chair Victor Tuba is the broker for employee benefits at the organization.

Greetings All. A few weeks back I posted a message suggesting that genealogists and historians concerned with regaining public access to Historic Census records might consider welcoming back our MPs to the Fall Session of Parliament. My suggestion was that a group of those concerned might do this by staging a small, peaceful demonstration at the Parliament Buildings, during the time that Parliament reconvenes, to convey our concerns regarding Bill S-13. I suggested that some of the local societies might consider organizing such a demonstration. My reason for the suggestion was to bring to the attention of the general public, rather than only genealogists and historians, our concerns regarding the withholding of 92 year old Census records. I have not been contacted directly by any of the local societies, but through third party information I have learned that they have declined to follow through on my suggestion. Their reasons for doing so are their own, and I respect that even though I was disappointed in their position. I still think that such a welcome back for the MPs would have been a good idea. I accept, however, that others may not always agree with my thoughts. I believe we all seek the same thing -- unrestricted access to Historic Census records -- although we may not always agree on the best way to achieve that. I thank those that contacted me to support my suggestion. I encourage everyone to continue contacting their parliamentary representatives to express ourr concerns regarding conditions and restrictions of Bill S-13, and to seek their support for moving and voting for amendments to the Bill that we consider necessary. Pam, The Ross name is predominant in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, so if you can sift through the bundle of them, you may find your man. At least they're not spread all over the country (grin). Perhaps try the website where you can search for documentation.... http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ It's a pay site but well worth it if you save up a few jobs for your hunt in there. It costs six pounds sterling to go in and it's valid for either 24 or 48 hours (I forget now), but you can have a look at certificates or OPR's and print them. I think you get a credit to open up 30 certificates all up but then I forget that too. This may be slightly off-topic, but there's a new 8-part series from Britain called "Antiques Ghostshow" that started on Bravo last week. It runs on Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. Sorry if you're seeing a duplicate copy of this email as I've sent it to a few Canadian lists I'm on. The programme features a psychic, an historian and a genealogist. In one segment of the first show, a fellow had brought in a model ship built by an ancestor in the late 1800s. The psychic "did his thing" and came up with all sorts of information on the ancestor. Then the historian and genealogist researched what the psychic had said and reported back with their findings. It was really quite fascinating! Oh to be able to hand over an ancestor's pocketbook that I have from the 1700s and get some help with my brick walls! Maybe if enough of us watch, the producers will come over and tap into *our* heirlooms. Sally
