I am looking for any information on my great-grandfather John Osborne born in Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to Nova Scotia. He married Emily Horne in 1878 and on the 1881 census gave his age as 22 Shirley Lane

This group all of a sudden is coming alive again, so maybe my query will hopefully get some response. John Goudie Robinson was born 25 December 1812 (Calculated from death certificate) and Margaret Turner was born in about 1820. They got married in St. Gabriel Presbyterian in Montreal on the 30 July 1839. Both were living in Montreal at the time of the marriage. Later census states that they were born in Quebec, and that he was a farmer from Scottish heritage. Their oldest children were christened in Christ Church, Montreal. They moved to Poltimore, Portland , Western Quebec area in the late 1840's And later still they moved to Ottawa, Ontario were they both died. Would appreciate any help/pointers/direction in finding parents and ancestry for John and Margaret. Thank you very much Peter Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself. -Chinese Proverb

Frequently while going through Quebec marriage registers I run across Scottish and Irish names (can't tell them apart in that context). Would there be any interest on this list in my posting what I find from time to time, even if it is not names anyone has asked about? I know that some lists like this and some don't so I wanted to ask before posting anything. I also have a subscription to PRDH (U. of Montreal, Quebec genealogy before 1799) online and also run across non-French names there. I can't take lookup requests unless they are for a specific location in Quebec. Most of what I have is "strays" outside the usual places the Scots and Irish settled, so I can't help with Montreal or most of the Eastern Townships. Please reply off-list rather than clutter up the archives with a lot of yes-no type responses. Regards, Sharyn McGlinchey Hay
Hello list, my request is to try to trace an uncle who migrated to Canada around 1929. his name was John McGarva, I believe that he landed in Quebec but have no details beyond that. It is known that he married there and had a family, however their whereabouts is not known either. He was the son of Thomas McGarva and Mary Jane McDowall married at Glenluce 1897. He was only 16 years of age when he left Scotland, so it is likely that he lied about his age and may also given a false christian name as well, is there someone out there who may be able to track him down. Hello Malcolm, As far as I can see there is no mail or very little, being generated to the list. I go out of the country for a week and make the decision to not have someone look after the SIC list, and mail comes in querying non receipt of the mail, I have checked all the places a list administrator can check for problems and there is not one.....I did a bit of counting or comparing the list has been extremely quiet...... For the months of Jan., Feb., Mar., Apr., 2004 total postings have been 75. For the same time frame in 2003 the messages totalled 368. In April 2002 the year Scots in Canada was introduced the total postings for that one month alone were 817.....quite the drop! All I am trying to point out is that things are very slow on this list, and have gradually gotten slower and slower. The list still has an excellent base of subscribers, 116 subscribed in Digest Mode and 221 on List Mode, total of 337. This reiterates the point that a subscriber made, "we Scots are a secretive bunch" !!!! Sure looks like it..... A list is only as productive as its membership. All I can say if anyone is worried about why there are no postings on SIC post a message, post a query as to what you are looking for, no one.... least of all me is going to tell you to stop. If you post you may be well surprised and get an answer. Hi I find that it is not the only list that is slow. The Irish-In-Canada are just as slow. And even the Metisgen is slow right now, which could be that people want to get outside. I have been inputting Robinson information into my data base. And sending another person Crooks information. If you post you may be well surprised and > get an answer. > > Christine > List Administrator Mail to most Rootsweb lists is down because of many factors. The biggest one is the problem with spam blocking. ISP spam blockers are notoriously bad about blocking Rootsweb mail. Most recently AOL subscribers and rr.com subscribers were affected and could not receive the mailing list mail. Another spam-related issue is personal spam-blocking programs. Many people have installed them and do not understand how to configure them or have programs that require the sender to "register" their address in order to send mail. The latter is incompatible with Rootsweb lists. Yet another issue is that some people have email filters that send their Rootsweb mail to their "Junk" or "Spam" folders where subscribers don't know to look for it. [This problem has become so bad that many publishers of online newsletters have established websites where they post their latest news and no longer send out bulk mail.] The end result is that people do not see their posts appear on a list (because they did not get them back in their own mail) and/or never saw the reply. Thus, they conclude that they need not bother with sending mail to the lists. Rootsweb lists are alive and well for those whose spam blockers allow the mail through. However, with recent media reports that as much as 30% of "good" email is being discarded by ISPs and never delivered, the problem will not be resolved any time soon. Regards, Sharyn
Reposting my interests: In 1836, at least three BLACKLOCK brothers came to the Kingston, Ontario area. They were Thomas (b.15 May 1804) m. Jean COCK of Dornock; James, and William, who married Margaret Glasford. They came with their father (unknown given name) after their mother died. They came from Ecclefechan, Dumfries, SCT. A fellow BLACKLOCK researcher thinks another brother JOHN may have followed them to Canada. I would like very much to correspond with BLACKLOCK researchers. I will send something to the list... I am looking for anything on the MCMARTINS that went to Bay Of Chaleurs, NB, Laborador and into Prescott county about 1800. Some of the names are LISCOM, ROBERTSON, MCEWEN. Most important is John McMartin who married Elizabeth MCEWEN In 1821. Thanks.... Laura McMartin-Ruhle
Your not the only one! The McAlpine's weren't any better with info. I've been looking for Andrew McAlpine (1775) for years, (the minister) from Sarnia, and another Andrew (1827-1915)his son, I think another minister. Macolm,It appears that we Scots are a very secretive bunch. The McInnis Clan doesn't give up very much, if at all. They even avoided the census takers, on many occasions, in both the US and Canada. I've been posting queries for years on my Grandfather Roderick J. McInnis and I've only had people here in the US come up with info on him here in Massachusett, for which I am most thankful. Because of the gap in the census on PEI, he has managed to slip through the cracks of time. Another problem I've come across is that there were 2 Roderick's in Boston at that time and I have acquired more information on Roderick A.than I need or want and nothing on Roderick J. Just sharing my tale of woe. So it is not the site it is our own families that have stayed under cover all this time. Good luck on your research, Jim
