    1. Robert BEATTIE, Jeannie ROSS, & QUEEN STUDIO, Toronto
    2. vardy-wands
    3. Hello Lorraine in NZ: I took a look at Toronto city directories yesterday to see if I could find anything that would help you. I found that the address 33 Queen Street West was listed for a photographer by the name of Harry Cooke from 1911 to 1914, except in 1913 when it was listed for a photographer by the name of John McLaughlin. There was no listing for Queen Studio under either in the Photography classified business section or in the alphabetical name listings. The name of the photographer and their address was shown only. In 1915 this address was listed as a restaurant. I didn't look prior to the 1911 date you gave in your initial listing. So the date range that Robert was in Toronto could be from 1911 to 1914 at least. I looked for Robert BEATTIE and found several from 1911-1918 but most gave only the name Robert with no middle initial. Their occupations and home address were given as well and this might give you a clue. I also looked for your ROSS family (Jeannie & Tom). I found a few listings for Miss Jean ROSS over the time period but the none of the Robert BEATTIE nor Thomas ROSS listings had the same address that I noticed. There were 6 Robert BEATTIEs listed in 1915 and 9 William BEATTIEs (in case he went by the latter). If you would like the detailed listings that I have, please contact me off list. 1. Re: [SCTCDN] Robert William Beattie
    2. Dear Lorraine, As I have had family in Toronto by the same time Robert was there I have taken your query as an opportune time to do a little checking. The best site I found was www.historyoftoronto.ca It has several pages of pictures of buildings in Toronto some of which would have been familiar to Robert. This includes a picture of the "old" city hall. Under links there are many other good sources to investigate. Another good general source to learn about Canada is olivetreegenealogy.com It occurred to me that perhaps Robert had to register for WW One. This site has information on Canadian Military but only lists the casualties. There is also a section on passenger ships to Canada. There is not too much available yet for the 20th century, but lists are steadily being added by the Ships Transcribers Guild. Hope you enjoy this as a start. 1. Post 1901 Census - Information Commissioner response
    2. Gordon A. Watts
    3. Greetings All. I have just spoken to Dan O'Donnell, the investigator in the Office of the Information Commissioner regarding our complaints against the Chief Statistician of Canada. The last time I spoke to him he indicated his best guess on when the response to our complaints would be forthcoming was 4 June 2004. Unfortunately we will have to wait a little longer. Mr. O'Connell indicated things are in the final stages and while he was unable to advise what that meant he now hopes that the reponses to our complaints will be available by mid to late June. He has promised to keep me apprised of any changes that might occur in this. While further delay is disappointing, so long as the end result is what we hope and expect we can afford to be patient for a little longer. On my recent trip to Calgary I had the opportunity to meet with Lois Sparling. Our legal action for the 1911 National Census is still on track. Our hearing in Federal Court is still scheduled for 8 June 2004 in Calgary. The only thing that will prevent the proceedings from going ahead would be if the government suddenly released the 1911 records. That is what happened when the 1906 records were released on 24 January 2003. I am not, however, holding my breath on that happening again. I do not expect a decision of the Court to be brought down on the day of the hearing. I suspect the Judge will reserve decision to have time to consider the arguments, pro and con, from each side. If the decision is based solely on the legislation we feel certain that we will win. Things being what they are, however, nothing is certain and we will have to wait and see what happens. Should we win we can probably expect the government to appeal the decision. If we lose, we will most certainly be appealing ourselves. Happy Hunting. Gordon A. I am not familiar with what may be purely Canadian terms. Having a look at the image the occupation of the head James M. Taylor would appear to read Farmer's Son - am I mis-reading this or is that a term for a Farm Servant? All the best, Eileen in Hampshire, UK

    1. James and Joseph Taylor from Scotland in Canada early 20th century
    2. EILEEN PARKE
    3. Good evening from England, Have recently joined this list in the hope of tracing some family in Canada. I am very happy to share my research with anyone who may be interested. I have a Joseph Andrew Waddell Taylor who hailed from Galashiels in Selkirkshire, Scotland born in 1883. He was in Edinburgh and surrounds in 1916 when he may have emigrated to Canada with his brother James Morris Waddell Taylor who was born in 1876 in Stow in Midlothian, Scotland. Their mother was Jessie Waddell, her parents were Andrew Waddell and Alison Howieson. Joseph was back in Edinburgh by 1921 and subsequently died there in 1947. But I can find no trace of James in Scotland after the 1901 census. Family lore has it that Joseph did go to Canada for a period of time and it makes me wonder if that was were James disappeared to as well. Has anyone heard of these two Scotsmen? Best wishes and many thanks, Eileen in Hampshire, UK

    2. Dear Malcolm, The 1871 Ontario census has Adam McLean, age 45, born in Scotland, Occu. F, Rel. FK, Aldborough Tnshp, Elgin Co. This census has heads of HH. only. (on line, at least ) The automated 1901 census for Aldborough is not yet complete. There are a couple of older John McLeans which brings up the possibility that Adam had a brother John & hence named his son John. The originals of the 1901 census are online so you could search the whole township although it would take time. 2. Joanne McLean
    3. Malcolm, 1881 shows Adam listed in Aldborough, Elgin West as MCLAIN, born Scotland, age 56 so born c. 1825 . Son John is with him (age 22) and a 49 year old Janet MCLAIN whose relationship is not obvious. She's the right age to be Adam's sister, but born in Ontario - this might give you ideas about immigration dates. Alternatively, if "49" is an error, and should be "19", she could be John's sister. Or, no relation at all! As for the 1901, Adam et al don't show up on the Automated Census project yet http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html If you go to that site, you can identify the pages of Aldborough that have been transcribed, and concentrate your search on the pages which have not.
