There are census's for 1841,1851,1861,1871,1881,1891, and 1901. Most libraries only hold a selection of the census returns and only for their own area. These are not indexed so need to be searched by hand. This is very time consuming. If you are searching a sparsely populated rural area it is not so bad. Big cities are another matter.
