HI: I am new to search in Scotland. I am working on my daughter-in-law's family of ARTHUR and have a problem. I know her great grandfather William ARTHUR was born in Dunbarton in 1860 along with a twin sister Catherine. William wrote a short autobiography in which he says he was one year old when they moved to Canada. He says "We left Helensburgh". Is that a town in Dunbarton. I am not familiar with the Parish names etc. for Scotland so please bear with me. They went to Montreal. There were eleven children in the family. William's father was Reverend Alexander Arthur of Dalkeith and his mother was a daughter of William Allan and Margaret Macauly - a cousin of Macauly's who had a home at Ardmcape on the Garelock. In my searching of the IGI I found - in the Ancestral Files - an Alexander Arthur married to Catherine Allan. These files show these two with eleven children married in 1845 but it has them all born in LaChine, Quebec, Canada. Now the family did settle there but according to William's autobiography some of the children were born in Scotland. The names of the children that he writes about match with the names in the IGI. I don't have any idea of where to go from here. It is all such a confusing mess - some of the childlren of Alexander and Catherine are shown born in Barony, Lanark, others in Row, Dunbarton, Blythswood, Glasgow - which confuses me. The Ancestral File is the only place where the Father Alexander is shown with a birth about 1820. The closest Alexander I can find a birth for otherwise is 1832 but my Alexander was married to Catherine in 1845. That certainly doesn't fit in. Can anyone tell me where to go with this - how to proceed. I tried writing to the submitter to the Ancestral File but my letter came back. I'm stumped!!! Regards, and thanks for listening, Gladys In Colorful Colorado gjensen@rmi.net
