    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Re: Kildrummy School in Aberdeenshire
    2. Margaret, I have no knowledge of the Kildrummy Primary School, but would love to learn about it, and, if there's a way, to help you with your very admirable project. My interest in it stems from the fact that my ggg grandfather, Archibald Robertson, was born at Monymusk, Aberdeenshire, in 1817. I would think that he, and his brothers, may very well have attended that school. Archibald was the son of William and Jane (Ross) Robertson, and he had two brothers that I know of, Alexander (who also came to America), and Andrew, who didn't come, was a very successful artist in London. I'm wondering if there would be any way to find out if the Robertsons did attend school there? It was a long time ago! I've been to Scotland twice now, but both times I was in the Borders (I have a lot of Armstrongs and others!), and to me it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. But I want very badly to go to the Highlands, as I've known about my Robertson family longer than any other, and the name is still in use in our family, as a given name. It was my father's given name, and my younger son's given name. (We "daughtered out" of the Robertson surname in 1863, with the marriage of my great grandmother, Emma Cecilia Robertson to James Marshall.) If it would be any help in determining whether or not Archibald went to your school, I do know that he attended King's College in Aberdeen, and later he went to Edinburgh to study painting, and after that he went to London where he studied under Sir Joshua Reynolds, and studied at the Royal Academy. He later returned to Aberdeen where he became a successful painter of portraits of all sizes, including miniatures, and conducted a "drawing academy" until 1791. After coming to America (he arrived in New York City in October of 1791), he came quite well known for his miniatures, and also did several portraits of both George and Martha Washington. (I really am not telling you all this information about Archibald to be boasting about him! I thought it might possibly help you be able to find out if he had indeed attended your school in his youth. I was a librarian at an elementary school for many years, and I know that we sort of kept track of some of our former students who had gone on to great things!) I have been hoping to take a bus tour of the Highlands this summer. Nothing is certain right now, but I really want very badly to do it. I've wanted really all my life to go to Scotland, and three years ago decided, instead of saying "one of these days, I'm going to Scotland" that THAT day was the beginning of "one of these days"! Life is too short to put things off, and ever since about the age of four or five, I wanted to go there. I started wanting to when I saw my first St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City (where I was born and brought up), and absolutely fell in love with the bagpipes! I always have a tape or two in my car of the pipes, and play them a lot (although sometimes if I have a passenger, I have to take pity on them, and play something else if they look too unhappy!) I didn't intend for this to be such a long letter, and if you've read this far, thank you!! And if there's any way I can be of help, I'd be tickled to death to do so. Hoping to hear from you, I am Sincerely, Barbara Armstrong Cleveland Cofer (BCofer612@aol.com) P.S. I hate to sound ignorant, but what exactly is "rationalisation" of small schools??
