Would anyone on the list be familiar with the name Pinkard, as being Scotch? Ive been told by several researchers, that it was Scotch, but I cant seem to get beyond that. Thanks so much. Kathleen
Hi The nearest I can get is Pinkerton which is a corruption of Punchardon or Pincherdon and derived from a place now known as Pont-Chardon near Argentan in Normandy. The name passed into Scotland early on following the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror 1066 and all that, and was in the Ragmans Rolls in 1296 as Pynkerton. It is mainly Scottish but also passed into Ulster with the Scottish settlers during the Plantation period. Pinkney is from a similar French - Norman source Gilo de Pincheni. who endowed monks at St Lucien, France with lands at Wedon, Northampton, England. Pink on its own is a northern english slang/dialect for `small`, so a pinkard could well be a small person. ?
