Hi, I am new to the list but have a query about an entry from the proclamation of banns and marriage register that I just received. I used Scotsorgins and last time received a copy of the marriage entry (1866), this time (1842) I received only the banns entry. Does this mean that no further record exists or can I apply elsewhere for more information? The entry says: Barber William Ploughman and Ann Purves both in this parish (Parish of Haddington, East Lothian) gave up their names for proclamation of banns on the 13th and 20th March, cautioners John Purves and Robert Barber. Is Ploughman likely to be a middle name? What are the cautioners, are they usually the father's names? Any help in interpreting the entry is mush appreciated. Thanks Michaela Morgan Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
My guess from the records I've seen is that Ploughman is his occupation. I have seen some records where it appears the banns are proclaimed in parishes of both partners, but of course the marriage only takes place in one parish. However, it appears they are both from the same parish. My guess would be the minister failed to go back and write down the date of marriage. All the records I've looked at (on microfilm) appear be recorded in sequence according to when banns are proclaimed with marriage date added at the end "..and married...(date)." It's possible banns were proclaimed the 13th and they were married the 20th but that is obviously not what is stated. Cautioners, as I understand it, were like guarantors or bondsmen--possibly fathers or brothers or uncles in this case. I am no authority on any of this--just my semi-educated guesses. D.
