Hello all, You may remember my Mary Petrie Smith Mystery (see below). I recently found this info in the IGI. I am quite sure it is not my Mary as the Birth date doesn't jive. But it may be a cousin etc. If anyone has any connections to this info please contact me. My FHC centre is closed until the 8th of Jan. Can anyone do a lookup on the 1881/1891 census?? MY MYSTERY I am researching Mary PETRIE Smith, my GGrandmother and she was a character. She immigrated to Canada in the early 1900's. She always said she was an orphan with no brothers or sisters and a gypsy. She said she was from Arbroath (her obit would have her born in 1888). She met my GGrandfather in Kingston Ontario Canada, Andrew LEES born in Forfar, Angus Scotland in 1878. They were married there Apr 11, 1912. I have recently sent for this marriage certificate. Birth info has been more challenging as Mary SMITH and Mary CLARK is a needle in a hay stack. And I did not see any Mary PETRIE Smith's in the Scottish birth indexes. The mystery is that on the Ontario marriage index her name is Mary CLARK. I wondered if she had been married before my GGrandfather. But my grandmother recently said she thinks the CLARK's were peple she worked for as a servant and she took their name on because they were so kind to her. Mary's youngest son has a middle name of CLARK. After my GGrandfather died Mary went back to Arbroath, her obit reads LEES-At Arbroath, Angus Scotland at Arbroath Infirmary on Feb 19, 1971, MARY PETRIE SMITH, age 83 years of 21 Clova Avenue (The home of her sister Mrs. Kennedy), beloved wife of the late Andrew LEES, Funeral services in David Mackay's Funeral Home. Gowan Street, Arbroath on Feb. 23 at 2pm thereafter to Dundee Creamatorium arriving 3pm. All friends invited. No flowers please.
