    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Margaret FRASER
    2. Hi, I am Margaret Parfitt and a new subscriber to the list. I am searching for my husband's great grandmother who seems a most elusive lady - apparently she was quite a formidable lady too. Her name was Margaret Fraser (on husband's death notice) but the family always referred to her as Margaret Annabelle Lovat Fraser - lovingly known as Jeannie. She was, according to family legend, is that she was born in Elgin? Inverness? and was the daughter of a minister. We believe she was born around 1860. She left Scotland for South Africa about 1878 with a doctor (Dr Black?) and his family as governess to their children. She may have suffered from asthma or the like. She married in Kimberley, South Africa, to a Benjamin Herbert South who was working on the Diamond Fields. One of her children was called John Alexander Fraser South which may be a clue to her past. She died in South Africa on 17 Oct 1933 after having 6 children and living most of her married life in Grahamstown, SA. If anyone can shed any light on our Margaret Fraser (for I'm sure it is not an uncommon name in the NE's surname list) I would be really delighted. Am happy to share the history of Margaret Fraser post leaving for South Africa. Regards, Margaret Parfitt, Aberdeen
