    1. [SCT~ROOTS] two marriage dates???
    2. Dawn Ellis
    3. I am trying to interpret some extracts received from the OPR via the GRO. 24 Oct 1768 Lewis Potter in Larbert & Margaret Towers of this parish (Airth) were married. Nov 18 1768 Lewis Potter of Larbert & Margaret Towers in the parish of Airth gave up their names for procamation in order __ Marriage were proclaimed in the face of the congregation the three Sabbath days immediately following and no objections having been offered they had a certificate thereof. I thought the procamation was done three Sundays BEFORE the marriage. In this case it appears that the marriage happened on the 24 Oct and the proclamations finished three Sundays later on the 18 Nov. Is this how I should interpret these extracts? Is this common? Thanks, -- Dawn Ellis dsellis@nbnet.nb.ca http://www.dawnellis.bravepages.com/ All emails scanned for viruses before leaving my machine!!!! I'm a TMGer!

    3. I wonder if they were married Oct 24 in Parish of Airth (where it appears Margaret lived) and then when they went to the other parish in November they were given a certificate in that parish to confirm that Banns had been proclaimed elsewhere. Or someone just made a mistake in their recording. Certainly Banns were proclaimed before marriage (sometimes only one day before) to be sure there was no reason they shouldn't marry. In one of my family's I have a baptism in two parishes, one in Aug & one in Sept. I assume they moved about the time the baby was born & it got baptized and then ?registered in the other parish. Interestingly, the baby has two different names--Peter & Patrick. But the parents are definitely the same. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dawn Ellis" <dsellis@nbnet.nb.ca> To: <SCOTLAND-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 28, 2002 3:29 PM Subject: [SCT~ROOTS] two marriage dates??? > I am trying to interpret some extracts received from the OPR via the > GRO. > > 24 Oct 1768 Lewis Potter in Larbert & Margaret Towers of this parish > (Airth) were married. > > Nov 18 1768 Lewis Potter of Larbert & Margaret Towers in the parish > of Airth gave up their names for procamation in order __ Marriage > were proclaimed in the face of the congregation the three Sabbath > days immediately following and no objections having been offered they > had a certificate thereof. > > I thought the procamation was done three Sundays BEFORE the marriage. > In this case it appears that the marriage happened on the 24 Oct and > the proclamations finished three Sundays later on the 18 Nov.
