    1. [SCT~ROOTS] BATTLE OF DUNBAR - ROSS
    2. Hi, List, Looking for ancestry of Killicross ROSS, believed to have fought at the Battle of Dunbar, later he is found in Colonial Massachusetts as a servent/farm hand on a farm in Ipswich, MA. Don't know how he got there. If he has a connection to the above battle his name could be listed in the English Calendar of State Papers - disposition of "Scotch rebel prisoners" who were sent to Dunbar, England for transport/sale to the colonies. Any help will be appreciated. Dave Howe

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] William BOYLE, Scotland. My Brick Wall.
    2. Anne Nazari
    3. Hello To Kevin and All. I really sympathise with Kevin and all others who are searching for that one clue or lead to get them started on their Scottish research. I too have been bashing my head at this brick wall for ages now, surely one day it must tumble! My elusive ancestor was William BOYLE. The earliest record I've found for him is the 1851 census of Liverpool where he is shown as William BOYLE occ: Carpenter Unmarried 26 Born in Scotland. I have looked up all the census from 1851 to 1891 and not one shows William's town of birth. William's marriage certificate states his father's name of John BOYLE occ: Weaver. So I have a William BOYLE b 1825c Scotland died 1890 St Helens Lancashire England. William's occupations over the years were: Carpenter, House Builder/ Journeyman, and later in life, a Grocer. The IGI lists one William BOYLE with father's name of John BOYLE. This is for William BOYLE chs 21 Dec 1828 Dalry Ayr Scot, father John BOYLE, mother Christian GRANT. That looks promising but I feel I cannot claim it just yet, even though the name GRANT, has been used as a second name in our family males for generations.. If, as my father seems to think, William came from Edinburgh, what records are available for apprentice carpenters, and are they on line? Could someone please pass on some encouraging help and support? Kind Regards from Anne in Australia.

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Margaret FRASER
    2. Hi, I am Margaret Parfitt and a new subscriber to the list. I am searching for my husband's great grandmother who seems a most elusive lady - apparently she was quite a formidable lady too. Her name was Margaret Fraser (on husband's death notice) but the family always referred to her as Margaret Annabelle Lovat Fraser - lovingly known as Jeannie. She was, according to family legend, is that she was born in Elgin? Inverness? and was the daughter of a minister. We believe she was born around 1860. She left Scotland for South Africa about 1878 with a doctor (Dr Black?) and his family as governess to their children. She may have suffered from asthma or the like. She married in Kimberley, South Africa, to a Benjamin Herbert South who was working on the Diamond Fields. One of her children was called John Alexander Fraser South which may be a clue to her past. She died in South Africa on 17 Oct 1933 after having 6 children and living most of her married life in Grahamstown, SA. If anyone can shed any light on our Margaret Fraser (for I'm sure it is not an uncommon name in the NE's surname list) I would be really delighted. Am happy to share the history of Margaret Fraser post leaving for South Africa. Regards, Margaret Parfitt, Aberdeen

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] MURDOCH
    2. Donna Williams
    3. Hi, I am new to the list. Distance prevents me from accessing a research centre. I am researching MURDOCHs. I have George MURDOCH, born 1820 Nairn. He was maried in 1852 to Alexina FORBES. His first wife was Margaret Ritchie. Georges parents were David MURDOCH (of ?) & Janet MURDOCH of Duffus. Another descendant of Janet's family have helped me out immensely with her family, but I know nothing about David. I would be very interested in communicating with anyone else researching these families. I would also appreciate assistance in how to further research these families. Thank you in anticipation, Donna.

    2. Donna Williams
    3. Hi, I am new to this list & am interested in the MUIRHEAD family. I would like to find out the origin of the name. I have been told the MUIRHEADS came from the STEWARTS in the mid 1700's, but I am not sure that this is correct. I would like to know more. I have Hugh MUIRHEAD & his wife Margaret JOHNSTON plus 10 known children in Midlothian. The children were born from 1792 to 1817 in Bathgate, Ratho, Currie & West Calder. The children included: Elisabeth, Margaret, Christian, James, Marion, Helen, Robert Purdie (mine), Barbara, Hugh & Grizzal. I would like to contact others interested in these families. I am also interested in direction in how to further research these families using the internet. Distance prevents me from accessing a research centre, so the internet is my greatest asset. Thank you in anticipation, Donna.
