    1. [SCT~ROOTS] McEWEN Old Parish Records
    2. margaret greer
    3. I have been searching for my gt. grandmother's baptismal record for years. Her name was Helen Duncan McEwen, parents James McEwen and Catherine nee Smith. She was born, according to family legend, at 2 High St, Perth in Nov 1848. GRO Scotland has no record of her baptism. They only hold Chuch of Scotland Old Parish Records. I have contacted various Episcopalian (Anglican) churches in Perth without success. The most likely venue for her baptism/christening was the Cathedral Church of St Ninian but no one at the National Archives, local archives or history centre knows where the old records for St Ninians are kept. Can anyone out there help? I would also like to contact anyone who has McEwen connections to Perth or Liverpool. Margaret Lancs, UK -- <Created and sent to you using the Amstrad e-m@iler>

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] WHO IS ISABELLA FINCHER/WATT?
    2. Rhonda Thompson
    3. Hi everyone, A few weeks ago I posted a query re William FINCHER born about 1800 in England, married to Barbara GARDEN 8th April, 1826, Nigg Kincardine and immigrated to Australia 1849. He had nine children, all born in the Newhills and Old Machar areas. I also posted a query re Isabella FINCHER who married Alexander WATT 20th June, 1851 in Old Machar, Aberdeen. I can only find one son to this couple John WATT christened 5th February, 1854, Old Machar, Aberdeen. I have been ploughing through the 1851 census for Old Machar in search of Isabella FINCHER and I found her. But thoughtlessly (I think) she was not born in England. She claims she was born in Old Meldrum. The entry was in Lower Middlefield: Lucy INGLES Unmarried 60 Proprietor of Houses Mains, Forfarshire Isabella FINCHER Servant Unmarried 30 House Servant Old Meldrum, Aberdeen Lucy INGLES is not listed as the head. That column is blank. Living right next door is the TAYLOR family. James TAYLOR a farmer of 73 acres, employing 3 labourers. One of the labourers is Alexander WATT, Servant, Unmarried, aged 40, Farm Labourer, Cairnie, Aberdeenshire. Between 1800 and 1855 I have only found two FINCHERs. William FINCHER (and, of course, his family) and Isabella FINCHER, born around 1821. She does not appear with his family in the 1841 census and the name Isabella does not appear in the next couple of generations in Australia. (They were very keen on renaming their children after their parents and siblings). I am a broken woman!!! I thought Isabella FINCHER would lead me to William FINCHER. Instead I now have a second mystery. I would appreciate any ideas as to why a girl with the surname FINCHER would be born in Old Meldrum where there are no other families with the same surname. Anyone with any interest in the surnames WATT, GARDEN or HILL feel free to contact me and I can give you what I have transcribed from the 1851 Old Machar census. Also some ALLANs and FRASERs. Have also copied from the Nigg, Kincardine Parish Register deaths from around 1800 for GARDEN, ALLAN, and a few FRASERs. These are probably available elsewhere, but may help someone from overseas, like myself. On the bright side I have been reading the 1845 Statistical Accounts of Scotland for Nigg, Old Machar and Newhills (online). They make fascinating reading and give you an understanding of your ancestors' lives and living conditions. Someone please help me!!! (Apologies to those who have to read this three times). Regards, Rhonda Thompson, Sydney, Australia

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Looking for WILSON relatives
    2. Mary Morris
    3. Hello all, I'm hoping to find a connection to my WILSON family through this list. I know that there are still family members living in Scotland...I just have no idea as to who they might be or where. So here's what I do know.... GG grandparents were Arthur and Margaret (Irvine) Wilson Gr grandparents... John Wilson b. 1858 or 59 Belfast? Janet (Jessie) McNeil b. 1858 or 59 in Cambusnethan, Lanark They were married May 21, 1880 at 35 Crawford Street, Partick. The marriage record shows Anderson Street, Partick as the usual residence of both the Wilson and McNeil (McNeill) families. In 1881 census John and Jessie are listed at 35 Crawford Street Govan, Lanark, Scotland. They had a 3 mon. old daughter, Janet. John's occupation is shown as Shipbuilder Labourer. It is believed that John died in 1892 in Scotland. Jessie died in 1914 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, USA and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wilkinsburg.PA. The children of John and Jessie were: Janet (Jessie) R. Wilson b.Dec. 1880 d.June 1950 m. William Ramsay Margaret I. Wilson b. July 1882 d.June 1951 m. William Harper Agnes M. Wilson b. Feb.1884 m. John Beveridge John M. Wilson b.1885 d.1920(?) m. Christina Adams Arthur Wilson b.Feb.16,1890 d.Jan. 10,1951 (my grandfather) m. Margaret Coatswood (Coatsie/Cotsy?) Cunningham June 6,1913 James M Wilson b.Mar. 8,1891 d.Mar. 1963 m. Ella Tyrie I have found Jessie and 5 of the 6 children in the Ellis Island Records. They left Wishaw Scotland for Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania at various dates between 1906 and 1909. The only other person I have connected to the family is a Winnie Lever, who in 1975 signed a letter to my aunt as "Aunt Winnie". She lived in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She told my aunt, she didn't realize there were so many of us Wilson's. She remembered her father talking of a couple sisters, possibly in Ireland. I think that Winnie may have been a niece to my Gr Grandfather John. Sorry to be so long winded...but I really need to find some connection. If you have read this far, I thank you for your time and interest! PLEASE let me know if you have a connection to the family. Mary Lou Wilson Morris Michigan, USAGet more from the Web. 3. I'm new to Scottish Geneology although I have sucessfully traced ancestors in other European countries to the 1600. I have a relative by the name of Anne Hamilton from Scotland who married a Norwegian sailor by the name of Ole Hansen. I have records of her children and of her husband but cannot locate Anne. Anne's daughter was born in 1868 - meaning Anne would have been born in 1840's. Can anyone be of assistance? Even general guidance would be helpful! Thanks! Lisa Tampa, Florida

    2. Hi, I'm new to this list. I am looking for my Ross roots: i.e. Benjamin Ross b. 1766 somewhere in Scotland to Reuben Ross. Benjamin died in Burke Co, North Carolina. The family story says that 3 Ross brothers came from Scotland to Pennsylvania together and each settled in different areas. Don't know the brother's names or where they settled other than Benjamin who married another Scot- Saphira Frizzell in North Carolina. They had a son named Reuben M. Ross (Haven't quite figured it out yet but there is also some relation in this family to the McCall's who originated in Scotland and moved to Ireland geneartions before John McCall appears in NC) Also look for William McCormick/McCormack who originated somewhere in Scotland and moved to Orange Co, New York marrying Elizabeth Wood or Atwood. Sons were Charles, Henry, and Dewitt or Jewett McCormick/McCormack. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Audrey Orlando, FL

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] LEATHEM / McLEOD - Oban, Scotland
    2. Bill & Joan Leathem
    3. Searching for any one who has these two surnames in their family trees. Also does anyone out there know what county Oban is in. I have tried several internet sites but have found no reference to the county. After several years of searching for a living relative in Ireland I have finally found her. Unfortunately, she had no information on the family history. All she can remember her grandmother telling her is that the LEATHEM family had McLEOD connections in Oban, Scotland. I remember being told years ago that our LEATHEMS probably originated from Scotland and not Ireland as previously thought. Here is the information on LEATHEM: Searching for any information on AGNES ARMSTRONG, born 9 Jan 1854. Agnes is said to be buried in Markethill, Armagh, Ireland. It was also mentioned that she once reside in Glenanne, Armagh, Ireland. AGNES married WILLIAM JOHN LEATHEM. William either managed or worked at a linen mill. They had five children: WILLIAM JOHN LEATHEM - William immigrated to Alberta, Canada we think to stay with Leathem relatives already in the province. William attended Trinity College in Belfast. He was a school teacher in Alberta, Canada and died at 29 years old from TB. MARY JANE "Jennie" LEATHEM married Willie McGaughey MARTHA LEATHEM married Sam Bell. SARAH AGGIE LEATHEM married a McGaughey also. Aggie LEATHEM - never married. Kind regards Joan Leathem - Kitwe, Zambia
