    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Scottish Roots
    2. Nancy
    3. Hi, I am searching for one of my relatives that built a prison in Scotland. I do not know his first name, but his last name is either Holloway or O'Holloway, and I think it would have been back in the 1800's or earlier, not sure. Can someone please give me some information about this, or where I might search for records of who built prison's or jails on Scotland back so long ago? Feel free to e-mail me at irishrose@ubtanet.com Thanks so much for your time. Nancy

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Re[SCT-ROOTS] GOWS, 1881 census
    2. Hedley Williams
    3. Hi All Many thanks to all those who have helped so far. Information to hand from Sheila confirms 1881 census( for Grange Place, Alloa, Clackmannan. Film No. 0203534;GRO Vol 465; Enum Dist 2; P.9) but we have now established that the first 3 children William Crawford, Janet Young, and George Alexander were all born to George GOW and Barbara CRAWFORD in Wick, Caithness. Barbara and George were married11 July 1871 at E.Kilbride, Lanark so maybe she was born there although her d.o.b is now estimated ( from Census) as 1844. I know of 3 other children..Netta, Margaret and Dona ld all of whom were probably born after 1881 so can anybody help with the 1891 census in case they are still in the same place, Alloa. Would like data on the CRAWFORDS and her syblings William, George and Jessie plus one other unknown. Thanks Hedley

    2. Hello McComb Researchers (all variations) These may help some of you McComb "researchers" out there. Its real easy to order these microfilms. I have found them all very helpful, you will see almost all the variations of the name being used. You will also see the many other Scottish surnames that are married into and around these lines. Very interesting. Some of you already know of these sources, some do not. Anyway, I have found them very helpful !! It seems most would be Scotch~Irish, some Quakers also.. . I need help with verifying a story about a certain John GOW born Wick, Caithness c.1698 to William Gow and wife Margaret CALDER prosperous Stromness merchants. He is said to have become a pirate c.Nov 1724 and was finally executed 11 June 1725. This information is in a booklet sent to me by a distant relation in California which is entitled 'John Gow The Orkney Pirate' and published by the Caithness Field Club 1978. 1. [SCT~ROOTS] FOGGO

    3. I am researching a family of FOGGO. The particular branch I am interested in appears to have its origins in Roxburghshire - Bowden, Smailholm and Kelso have been quoted on the I.G.I. and with ref. to 1881 and 1891 census for Kelso. My interest centres on the following four women :- 1.Ann FOGGO b. Bowden 1813, parents William FOGGO and Jean Allan / Allen. The 1881 census for Auchtergaven in Fife has Ann (the same one!) living with a younger sister Margaret b. Dunkeld. There is also record of a brother David also born Dunkeld, while the older siblings of this family were born in Roxburghshire. 2. Elizabeth FOGGO b. Smailholm about 1846-48 and who was born out of wedlock to an Ann FOGGO mentioned on her 1883 marriage cert. as deceased, but possibly alive and well in Auchtergaven. Elizabeth is on the 1881 and 1891 census for Kelso and husband (of 1883)James WALKER as well as two illegitimate daughters Mary and Ann. 3.Mary FOGGO / Mary RAE FOGGO/ Mary RAE STUART FOGGO according to varying documentation. b. 1872 at Kelso, m.1897 at Kelso, d. 1964 at Berwick-upon-Tweed. She was Elizabeth FOGGO’s illegitimate daughter. 4. Mary FOGGO b. about 1874 childless widow of John FOGGO (he and brother Robert FOGGO were carriers in Kelso / Berwick ) living in Newcastle-on Tyne in the 1930s. FOGGO was this Mary’s maiden and married name. She was the first cousin of Mary FOGGO 3. Any information regarding these FOGGOs or any other FOGGO families in the area of Roxburgh, Berwick or Fife would be most gratefully received by, Patricia Taylor.

    3. Hello All: I recently launched a STOTT Family Tree website. It focuses on my line of Yorkshire-based Stotts but it also includes a growing volume of information that can be useful to Stott family historians including those who have roots in SCOTLAND. The good soul who has provided a huge compilation of Stott births, marriages and deaths as well as Stotts in Scotland in the 1881 British Census is Vija Tate whose husband, Bob Stott, has Scottish roots. So, if you're a Scot Stott, visit www.stottshot.com . Vija would like to hear from you if you do find some useful information or a link. Her e-mail address is on the website. Again, I do not have Scottish ancestry with my Stott ancestry, however, I do have Scottish roots with GRAY, CORBETT AND DOW, all who resided in Aberdeen for varying lengths of time during the 1800's. Information on these family lines is on my website. Hope the Stott website is useful to some of you. Regards Greg Stott Toronto, Canada gregstott@home.com This message has also been posted on the Aberdeen and Scotland Genweb lists. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. With the general UK elections behind us as recent history, Scotland enters perhaps the most important period in its modern history. In the next two years, decisions will be made and debates raging on the path to be taken toward the 2003 Scottish Parliament elections; and the actions to be mandated by that body following the elections. Independence, EU absorption, taxation, fiscal control, and social services in Scotland all become key points of interest as Scotland determines the road of its future. A new and growing discussion list has been established to deal with these questions and issues from an international and politically non-specific position. The single biggest obstacles to Scottish Independence are the proliferation of parties in Scotland, and a UK specific constitutional system. This forum attempts to bridge those gaps, and add support from Scots world wide, as an international forum of understanding and interactive communication. Now at 78 strong and very active, the eList aspires to be the international point of focus for all Scots issues: past, present, and future impacting on the Independence issue. Regardless of political affiliation, party membership or location, If the future of Scotland is a concern; please consider becoming involved in the debate and resolution of common questions. Join the action on FreeScots list. Visit and check it out, or stay for the long haul as historical changes are made in the very definition of Scotland and Its government. Simply send a blank email from the link below to explore this free discussion option, and take active part and be heard as Scotland redefines itself for the first time in three centuries. Be a player and not an observer..listen in or speak your piece now and join others of all political persuasions who care about Scotland and are scattered all over this big world. It is also time for American, Canadian, Australian and other expat descendents to take a part, and show more than just a recognition for a homeland. Help overcome the distrust of outsiders that prevails in some regions of Scotland, as apathy and hopelessness threaten to allow external control to continue in a place called Scotland; a place that Encarta calls "an administrative region of the UK", and in which poverty has reached thirty percent of all children under ten. Busy people should consider daily digest or web only access, as the mail traffic can be heavy at times. It costs nothing to talk, listen, understand and offer support and identity to the land of our forefathers. Slàinte mhath; Rex H. McTyeire Moderator: FreeScots-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
