Margaret Sorry to say I have no Idea if our McNeil line is related. I haven't been able to get very far in my search. Here is what I do Know..... John McNeil married Janet Reid (date unknown) Their daughter Janet (Jessie) McNeil born Cambusnethan, Lanark, 1856 or 1858. Jessie married John Wilson, May 21,1880, in Partick. They had six children; Janet(Jessie), Margaret, Agnes, John, Arthur and James. It is believed that John Wilson died in Scotland cir. 1892. Jessie and her grown children came to the U.S. at various dates between 1906 and 1909. They settled on Swissvale Ave. Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. Hi, I have several different family links with Scotland. This time I am interested in anything , including the place of Marnoch, as well as other decendents connected to George, John and Alexander? McIntosh, s/o James McIntosh and Teresa Brown. George was born March 13, 1789 in Marnoch, Banffshire. Johm emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia abt 1817. The next year, George escorted John's fiance, Elizabeth Duncan across the Atlantic. John and Elizabeth married and had a family. They settled near Sherbrooke, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia and George married Jane Ettinger . They settled in Smithfield, Guysborough Co. and had 10 children. Their 1st child, Thurza was b. 1821 and their 10th, Susanna was born 1839. My husband is decended from John ,born 1824. Thank you in advance. I am trying to locate my Great Great Grandmother, Henrietta Kathyrn McCandlish, who came over from Kirkcudbright Scotland somewhere between 1850-1860. I think it was closer to 1855-1858. I think her father might have been William Candlish and mother Isabella. The last name may have also been Candlish. It seems she might have added the Mc to her name when she came to USA. Her grandparents might have been John & Jane Candlish. She might have had other siblings with a sister named Catherine. Henrietta's father remarried after her mother's death and at the age of 18-21 Henrietta came to the United States. Henrietta came by ship to the New York Harbor and then lived with her aunt in Iowa. Aunts name, I think, is Eliza Candlish, who later might have returned to Scotland. Henrietta married in Brookville, Iowa in January 27, 1859, to Fredrick C. Nawgel. I have not been able to find any records in Iowa of their marriage or etc. I have not been able to find her on any immigrant list. Henrietta's birthdate is June 2 or 5, 1837 and she died in August 18, 1900. She is buried in MO. I don't know if she, Eliza, was Henrietta's father's sister or who she is. I am assuming since this William Candlish funeral card is in the family Bible, he was her father. I also, have other funeral cards that were in the family Bible. They were for: 1) Catherine Grieve - Card states: Beloved wife of Thomas Davies who departed this life May 30, 1888. Toxteth Park Cemetery. Thinking maybe she was Henrietta's sister and was adopted by the Grieves. Maybe later married a Conning. 2) James Conning-d. October 26, 1885 at 25 years of age. Toxteth Cemetery. I have no idea who these people are, but they must be some importance as their cards were in the family Bible. Maybe her father-in-law? Not sure why Henrietta added the Mc to Candlish upon coming to U.S. or if her father used the Mc at one time. Is there a site to view this cemetery records? I can't find any concrete proof. I have no other info and keep running into walls. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Please reply. Thank you, Cindy

Hi List, Does anyone know about the origans of Scottish names? I am researching the name Huntly/Huntley and I found a Marquis of Huntly who fought in the English civil war in 1644 along with his sons some of which were on the opposit side. His name was George Gordan and the Clan was the Gordans. They were from the Highlands up between Aberdeen and Elgin. They are known for their military exploits. Would any of the decendants of the Marquis of Huntly take the name Huntly or would they all be Gordans? Would the people from the 13th, 14th century in the Gordans' territory take the name Huntly? Does anyone know the origan of the name Huntly? Thanks for any help. Joan
Hi I'm new to the list and searching info on my Uncle Adam B WATSON. He apparently died down a coal mine on 12th July 1920-1930 ( not sure of the year as the year on the photo of the gravestone is blurred). The mine was at Roslin and nicknamed " The Moat". Another Uncle died of a coal mine related lung disease. My fathers side all lived in Loanhead and I was wondering if anyone had any info on the mine or the Watson's in the Loanhead, Midlothian area. My mothers side MORRISON came from Edinburgh. Thank you Heather.
Hi All, I am new to trying to research in Scotland and wondered if someone might tell me how far back to census' go in Scotland (i.e. the first one in America is 1790)? Thanks, Audrey
Hello, I'm new to this list. I'm afraid I am rather ignorant about family history in Scotland and I'm not sure if the Censuses were taken at the same time as in England. If anyone has access to a Census for 1841 or 1851 (or thereabouts if not the same time), I would be very grateful if you might be able to find the family of James and Margaret Kay (nee Fraser), probably in the parish of St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. They had at least 2 children, Margaret and Catherine. Thanks in advance for your help. Joanna
