    3. Dear Margaret - Have you tried the IGI or Scottish Origins? I had a quick look for Margaret Ann Fraser on the IGI and found two possibles:- Margaret Ann Fraser born 5th February 1855 in Banff. Parents - William Fraser and Isabella Morrison Margaret Ann Fraser born 17th September 1861 in Keith, Banfff . Parents - Hugh Fraser and Isobel Coutts. Scottish Origins is an excellent site for searching for ancestors. The price for access to the index is GB6.00. and the cost for certificates is BG10.00. For the £6.00 you get 24 hours access and up to 30 search pages. It includes BMD records, parish records and the 1881 and 1891 censuses. Hope this helps. - Morag. 1. [SCT~ROOTS] Margaret Fraser
    2. At my wits end, does anyone recognise this Fraser? I know that: Margaret Ann Fraser (21+) married Benjamin Herbert South (>21) on 2nd or 4th of June 1882 in Kimberley. Their first child, Alice, was also born in Kimberley in 1883. Margaret South (nee Fraser) died in Johannesburg on 17 Oct 1933 aged 73? years and is buried in Brixton Cemetery. Margaret and Ben South lived most of their lives in Grahamstown. She is listed in Grahamstown as Margaret Annabelle Lovat Fraser Margaret Ann Fraser came out to South Africa from the north of Scotland - from "Banley" but this has been checked and is probably/possibly Banff. We know no more facts - plenty of stories: *she was from the Elgin area *she came from a large family of brothers *her father was a minister *she came to South Africa with a Dr Black and his family as a governess *she fell in a river and as a result suffered from chest problems and went out to SA with the doctor to improve her health *she was related to the Lovat Frasers *she used names for her children not featured among her husband's family: Georgina Cecelia, (Samuel) Urquhart, John Alexander Fraser, Janet Hutton *she was known as Jeannie Does anyone know of a Dr Black who went off to South Africa/ Kimberley around 1878/1881? Any help or advice would be so gratefully received. Regards, Margaret Parfitt

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] help with finding info for family roots
    2. Kathleen tentwo
    3. Hi! I am new at this, in fact just got my computer last month. After getting information here in California, I found that both of my grandparents we're from Scotland. I went to Scotland several years ago and went to the towns we're they were born, married and some pasted away. I need some help to see if I can find anyone who is also looking for my grandparents, How do I go about that? My mother's, mother is Hanby Smith Reid, born November 1865 in Alva, Scotland. Her parents were John Reid and Jessie Adam Reid. Her grand father was also John Reid. Hanby Reid Married John E. Whiteford in June of 1892 in Danville, Illinois. My father's mother is Ann Mcgrath born July 1862 in Glasgow, Scotland. My father's father is Peter Connolly born January 1868 in Kircaldy, county of Fife. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. It was truly a wonderful experience going to Scotland and visiting the places where my grandparents lived. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from someone. Kathleen

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] KAY/FRASER/TAYLOR
    2. I thought I'd repost my interests after a bit of a break. My gg grandmother was Catherine KAY born in Edinburgh. According to the 1861 London census, she would have been born c.1835. She had an older sister, Margaret, born c 1821. I have found a possible match, daughters of James KAY and Margaret FRASER, but the Catherine was baptised 1828. However, Margaret was baptised in the correct year. The other reason I think this may be the correct family, is that family tradition has always said that we have a link to the Fraser clan. James & Margaret were married 21st November 1812 at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, and the 2 girls were baptised there. My other Scottish interest is for Cameron TAYLOR, my great uncle-by-marriage. He was born on the Isle of Skye during the 1890s. His father was apparently the Dominie, and Cameron moved to London and became an architect. We know nothing about his life and family in Scotland and would love to hear from any family. Sorry this is rather long winded, but hopefully someone else is researching one or the other of these families. Joanna in Coventry

    2. jenny wenham
    3. Hi All, First of all, my apologies to anyone who gets multiple copies of this message on various lists, or who have already heard this story. I am at a total dead end and am grasping at straws, most of which seem to disintergrate as soon as I get hold of them <bg>. First I will tell you what we know from actual documents. Frederick BEATTIE enlisted in the Royal Marines on 26th June 1847 at Killybegs in Donegal, Ireland. We have full records of his marriage to Ann(e) Willey in 1861, births of various children, emigration to Australia in 1883 and death in 1884. (can't find where he's buried, but that's another story.) Now for what we don't know for sure. On Frederick's enlistment he gives his parents' names as Alexander BEATTIE and Margaret MILLER. He states that he was 19 years, making his DOB 1827 or 28. He also states that his place of birth was "Parish of Killaghtee in or near the town of Hollybrook in the County of Donegal". His occupation is given as Labourer. Well, extensive searches on the net, by mail and in person have failed to find any record of his birth or of his parents' births, deaths, marriage or of them ever having lived in that area. Mmmmm. There is also an adress for Alexander and Margaret of No 1 Albert Place, Brandon Street, Malworth, London. I am not sure what date this address relates to or the accuracy of it, though. So, what is the theory. Did he change his name? If so, I can only think that I might as well give up now. On the other hand, it has also been suggested that Alexander and Margaret may have moved from Scotland as many apparently did in the late 1700s early 1800s, and may then have moved to England, and so were not born, married or died in the area. Well, there it is. If you have any ideas where I can chase more ghosts, or if you have any information that might help, I would love to hear from you. TIA Regards, Jenny in (mostly) sunny Central Queensland

    3. "This is not a hoax" Hi List, My brother-law has a form of Leukaemia, and his last wish is to find his first love before he passes away. This may not be the place to put this, but I'm hoping that some one knows this lady. Her name was ROSLYN MORGAN (maiden name) she lived in Taylor or Tor Street, near Newtown Park Toowoomba. The year was about 1957. Roslyn had a brother John, he died Blood Disease, and was about 16 years old at the time of his death. Roslyn also worked at PALILA Clothing Company, 10a Neil Street, Toowoomba. He lost contact with her after he moved to north Qld. Hoping that someone may know Roslyn Jackie
