    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Mary Petrie Smith Mystery
    2. Frank & Jamie D'Angelo
    3. Hello all, You may remember my Mary Petrie Smith Mystery (see below). I recently found this info in the IGI. I am quite sure it is not my Mary as the Birth date doesn't jive. But it may be a cousin etc. If anyone has any connections to this info please contact me. My FHC centre is closed until the 8th of Jan. Can anyone do a lookup on the 1881/1891 census?? Thanks in advance! Mary Petrie SMITH Birth:  2 Jun 1874 Dundee, Angus, Scotland Parents: Father:  Alexander SMITH Mother:  Isabella PARIS James PETRIE Birth:  19 Feb 1871 Dundee, Angus, Scotland Parents: Father:  Alexander SMITH Mother:  Isabella PARIS Best Regards, Jamie LEES Windsor Ontario Canada Researching LEES, MC/MACDONALD, THOM, MATHEWSON, PETRIE SMITH, CLARK, KENNEDY In Dundee, Arbroath, Montrose, Forfar ANGUS SCOTLAND,CANADA and USA (MI, PA). MY MYSTERY I am researching Mary PETRIE Smith, my GGrandmother and she was a character. She immigrated to Canada in the early 1900's. She always said she was an orphan with no brothers or sisters and a gypsy. She said she was from Arbroath (her obit would have her born in 1888). She met my GGrandfather in Kingston Ontario Canada, Andrew LEES born in Forfar, Angus Scotland in 1878. They were married there Apr 11, 1912. I have recently sent for this marriage certificate. Birth info has been more challenging as Mary SMITH and Mary CLARK is a needle in a hay stack. And I did not see any Mary PETRIE Smith's in the Scottish birth indexes. The mystery is that on the Ontario marriage index her name is Mary CLARK. I wondered if she had been married before my GGrandfather. But my grandmother recently said she thinks the CLARK's were peple she worked for as a servant and she took their name on because they were so kind to her. Mary's youngest son has a middle name of CLARK. After my GGrandfather died Mary went back to Arbroath, her obit reads LEES-At Arbroath, Angus Scotland at Arbroath Infirmary on Feb 19, 1971, MARY PETRIE SMITH, age 83 years of 21 Clova Avenue (The home of her sister Mrs. Kennedy), beloved wife of the late Andrew LEES, Funeral services in David Mackay's Funeral Home. Gowan Street, Arbroath on Feb. 23 at 2pm thereafter to Dundee Creamatorium arriving 3pm. All friends invited. No flowers please.

    2. Joana Donovan
    3. I am new to the list and would like to know if SKS could help me locate a pen pan? We lost track of each other some 30 years ago. Her name is Greta Hazeldean McGouaig and her last mailing address was 41 Hewmills, Tullibody, Clackmannanshire. She grew up at 124 Churchill Street in Alloa. I would welcome any information on Greta and/or her family. Her husband's name was Harry, and they had two sons, Alex and Harry. Perhaps a check of the local telephone book would yield an address? I will be overcome with joy if I could find Greta once again. Thank you in advance. Joana Donovan Maryland, USA

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Reuben Ross.Benjamin Ross.Reuben M. Ross
    2. Hello All, It has been awhile since I posted this info so I thought it may be time to try again... My 5great grandfather was Benjamin Ross b. 1766 somewhere in Scotland-I know not where but sure would like to. He was the son of Reuben Ross. Family story says that 3 Ross brothers (don't know Benjamin's brothers names) came to America through Pennsylvania and each settled in a different area. Benjamin settled in Burke Co, NC and married Saphira Frizzell (also of Scottish heritage) on  20 Nov 1794 in what was then Lincoln Co, NC. Their only son was Reuben M. Ross b. 1797 in Lincoln Co, NC.  Reuben M. Ross was a teacher and married Deborah England. I'm not sure that the family moved, I think the county lines just changed and became Burke Co, NC. Children of Reuben and Deborah: Benjamin A. Ross, possibly a Joseph Ross, John Ross, Stephen A. Ross, William A. Ross, Reuben Albert Ross, and Sarah Eliza Ross. (William A. married Mary Ann Denton (dtr of Anderson Denton), Sarah Eliza married Emanuel Denton (son of William Denton), Stephen A. married first Amelia Abigail McCall (dtr of John McCall) and 2nd Elizabeth Byers/Biers, Benjamin A. married Saphronia?, Joseph married Delilah ?, John married Eliza ?, Reuben Albert married ?? I know of a great many the descendants but am having trouble with ancestors and where in Scotland this Ross family was from and when and where (town) they came to America. They may have traveled from PA to NC with the McCall family and John McCall was the bondsman for the marriage of Reuben M. Ross to Deborah England. I would also love to connect with any descendants. Sure would appreciate any help, Audrey Orlando, FL

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] MCNAIRN
    2. Hello everyone. I don't know if anyone here might have more information on the family that I'm researching, but I like to post my interests every now and then, just to see if anyone has learned anything new. Anyway, here we go. My main area of research (actually mine and my cousin Judi's) is the MCNAIRN family from the parrish of Penninghame, Wigtownshire, Scotland. William McNairn (1704-1769) was the first Laird of The Knowe, a farmstead near Newton Stewart. One of his sons, John McNairn (1745-1814) was my 4xgreat Grandfather. John left Scotland for the United States in 1773, then moved to Canada in 1778. He was a United Empire Loyalist. His family stayed in Canada for awhile....my grandfather was born there. When my grandfather, Oral Charles McNairn married my grandmother, Beulah Kathleen Richardson, they moved to New Jersey where my mother was born. They moved to Ohio, and then I was born in Indiana. There are other McNairns from all over that my cousin (who is my 6th cousin) Judi and I are trying to make connections with--Scotland, England, all over Canada, The US, Australia, and Jamaica. Both of us believe that if we can document back far enough, we will find that we all have common ancestors, probably from the Wigtown area. Judi has a great website about the McNairns that we have researched and documented. If you have time, please take a look at it. If you think you might have further information that might be useful to us, please let me or Judi know....we would be eternally in your debt! Judi's website is: http://www.jamcnairn.com/mcnairn/index.htm We hope to hear from you! Thanks for taking the time to read this! Cheryl Grice, born Zetta McNairn and Judi McNairn
