There is also an "Ancestral File" which lists the names & addresses of the researchers who submitted this information. Go to their webpage (www.familysearch.org) and choose search. Unfortunately, they have not included his parents names and probably were unable to find a birth/christening record in Scotland. I have researched Islay for several years and unlike other areas of the Scotland, Islay records are not very good. For example, Kilchoman (one of the six Parishes on the Island) never kept any records at all until 1828. But there is a very active research community who have been very ingenious at finding early land records, etc. Steve Gilchist has a wonderful website where he has archived a great deal of information submitted by list members. (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~steve/islay/info.htm) You can also subscribe to the Islay list. Instructions are listed on Steve's page - just click "Mailing list" on the top of the page. Sheila

    3. I hope someone can help me find information on the mother and father of my GGGrandparent Malcolm McCourry who came from Scotland (supposedly Islay). I have no information on him prior to coming to the US except he was born in 1742. How do you find who the parents were if you do no have a clue about his life from birth until he settled in Morristown, NJ around 1765. The name could have possibly been a different spelling then also. Maybe SKS would be able to look him up and find something on his family and the marriage date and I could order a certificate of his parents and his birth certificate. I would like to know if he had any brothers or sisters also if that is possible. I'm hope this information will be enough to do a search on him. Thanks, Phyllis White (McCourry)

    1. Re: [SCT~ROOTS] Scotland Census
    2. Hi Ginny...I was extremely fortunate in being able to limit (??) my search based on the births of my GGP's first and second children...the first being born in Dundee in February, 1863 and the second in Albany, New York in May of 1865. This amounted to 22 rolls of film and, as I mentioned, I'm certain, no matter how I approach the task I'll find what I want (hopefully) in whatever is the final roll. One interesting point in this research....those dates include ships arriving at Castle Gardens (all this was prior to Ellis Island, which, as I'm sure we've all heard, is now computerized) from everywhere. This helps somewhat in that one can find on the first page of each of the entries the "from" and "to" of each vessel. There are (I was surprised) quite a few from South America, the southern Atlantic islands and even occasionally, Africa. However, one must be careful with other ships arriving from Europe unless you know definitely from where your ancestors departed. Many ships out of Bremerhaven (Germany) also stopped in Liverpool and occasionally even Ireland (can't remember the city) on their way to the states and picked up passengers there. Amazingly, (for the time period) the handwriting is generally quite legible. It's the condition of the pages (most are at least 150 years old!!) that make the reading so exasperating!! A good magnifying glass helps a great deal!! A suggestion....If you know the dates of arrival in the U.S. (and are pretty certain they're accurate!) back up the date a couple months (for date of departure) and start by ordering those inclusvie dates. I don't know if you've looked at the NARA list but dates are included on each roll. As I mentioned somewhere above in this book I'm writing (!!) I went strictly by inclusve dates and Castle Garden. If I don't find them on those rolls, then I'll have to start thinking of other ports of call and it could be anywhere on the east coast of U.S./Canada!! My reason for starting with N.Y. was their (apparently) immediate settling in Albany, N.Y. - so one of these days I'm going to find out Why Albany? Good luck and let me know how things progress with your search!! Barb in MO

    3. Dear Barb, I hope you don't mind me asking what years you are looking for with the ships lists. My Ironside family from Scotland traveled to NYC in 1886 and 1887 and I have no idea how many ships that would include but from what I've read I'm betting its more than a few. 2. Has anyone out there used the Scottish census? What info is included? I'd be most happy to pay a professional researcher for time, etc. if the listings include enough in- formation to be useful...i.e. name, spouse, children, address, age, etc. I've been trying to find siblings for my GG and GGF without much success - probably because the Gamble name in Ireland/Scotland seems to be as "fruitful" as Johnsons or Swen- sons in Minnesota. Any suggestions, information or references would be most greatfully (underlined) appreciated!!!!! I'm currently perusing the Castle Garden incoming ships for GGF and family. Even though I've been able to limit the time period because of birth of children (first in Scotland, second in New York). it takes a tremendous amount of time to go through 22 rolls of microfilm (and with my Irish luck, no matter how I "attack" them, the data will be in the last one!!). I'm (hopefully) planning a trip to Scotland this fall, but really don't want to spend all my time reading microfilm!! Thanks for whatever help, suggestions, etc. offered!!! Barb in MO

    2. Judy asked: Is there a 1841 and or 1855 census for Scotland. Would there be anyone who has access to one that would be willing to do a lookup? And Grant replied: You will find the Scottish census returns on microfilm in most larger local Libraries. There are census's for 1841,1851,1861,1871,1881,1891, and 1901. Most libraries only hold a selection of the census returns and only for their own area. These are not indexed so need to be searched by hand. This is very time consuming. If you are searching a sparsely populated rural area it is not so bad. Big cities are another matter. Hope this helps. I will add: But if you are not in Scotland, the census microfilm are available through your local LDS Family History center. Note that they are listed by Parish - and you will need to have some general idea of a location in order to use these. Later census (1881 & 1891) have been indexed by name and can be searched electronically - but so far as I know there is no (complete) electronic index for the early census records. If you know where to look - there are some census records (usually 1851 and later), where street indices are available for some of the urban areas - also on microfilm at the FHC. A Surname index may (depends on the area) exist in hardcopy - often published by local genealogy association. As an example (there are others) check out the following link (Scottish Genealogy Society) which sells a variety of publication - including some census index. http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/ click on "Books" to go to their catalog Sheila
