    1. Re: [SCT~ROOTS] Re: Kildrummy School in Aberdeenshire
    2. Many thanks for your call, Barbara. In fact Monymusk is about 15+ miles from Kildrummy so it is unlikely that he would have attended Kildrummy School, but would have attended the school in the Monymusk area. I in fact taught at the present Monymusk School for a short time before my son was born and he was baptised in the beautiful church in Monymusk which has a 12th century tower. What I will do is take your letter to the current head teacher of the school and see if there is any way of tracing your ggg grandfather in the area. We should be able to find them on the Old Parish Records for the beginning of the 19th century. I have access to these at our Family History Society in Aberdeen. I will certainly pass on any information I manage to find. Incidentally, rationalisation of small schools is the authority's way of saying we need to reduce the number of small rural schools and group all the children together in much bigger units (in the words of one officer - this will be done because of the 'educational dubiety' of small schools!!). Our small schools, including Monymusk and Kildrummy, work incredibly hard to ensure that our children are in no way disadvantaged by being in small establishments. In fact it is our small schools which inspectors are highlighting as delivering excellent education. But one has to accept that politics and common sense do not necessarily go together. I will keep in touch and am so grateful that you took the time to write. I promise it is not in vain. Kind regards, Margaret Parfitt

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Re: Kildrummy School in Aberdeenshire
    2. Margaret, I have no knowledge of the Kildrummy Primary School, but would love to learn about it, and, if there's a way, to help you with your very admirable project. My interest in it stems from the fact that my ggg grandfather, Archibald Robertson, was born at Monymusk, Aberdeenshire, in 1817. I would think that he, and his brothers, may very well have attended that school. Archibald was the son of William and Jane (Ross) Robertson, and he had two brothers that I know of, Alexander (who also came to America), and Andrew, who didn't come, was a very successful artist in London. I'm wondering if there would be any way to find out if the Robertsons did attend school there? It was a long time ago! I've been to Scotland twice now, but both times I was in the Borders (I have a lot of Armstrongs and others!), and to me it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. But I want very badly to go to the Highlands, as I've known about my Robertson family longer than any other, and the name is still in use in our family, as a given name. It was my father's given name, and my younger son's given name. (We "daughtered out" of the Robertson surname in 1863, with the marriage of my great grandmother, Emma Cecilia Robertson to James Marshall.) If it would be any help in determining whether or not Archibald went to your school, I do know that he attended King's College in Aberdeen, and later he went to Edinburgh to study painting, and after that he went to London where he studied under Sir Joshua Reynolds, and studied at the Royal Academy. He later returned to Aberdeen where he became a successful painter of portraits of all sizes, including miniatures, and conducted a "drawing academy" until 1791. After coming to America (he arrived in New York City in October of 1791), he came quite well known for his miniatures, and also did several portraits of both George and Martha Washington. (I really am not telling you all this information about Archibald to be boasting about him! I thought it might possibly help you be able to find out if he had indeed attended your school in his youth. I was a librarian at an elementary school for many years, and I know that we sort of kept track of some of our former students who had gone on to great things!) I have been hoping to take a bus tour of the Highlands this summer. Nothing is certain right now, but I really want very badly to do it. I've wanted really all my life to go to Scotland, and three years ago decided, instead of saying "one of these days, I'm going to Scotland" that THAT day was the beginning of "one of these days"! Life is too short to put things off, and ever since about the age of four or five, I wanted to go there. I started wanting to when I saw my first St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City (where I was born and brought up), and absolutely fell in love with the bagpipes! I always have a tape or two in my car of the pipes, and play them a lot (although sometimes if I have a passenger, I have to take pity on them, and play something else if they look too unhappy!) I didn't intend for this to be such a long letter, and if you've read this far, thank you!! And if there's any way I can be of help, I'd be tickled to death to do so. Hoping to hear from you, I am Sincerely, Barbara Armstrong Cleveland Cofer (BCofer612@aol.com) P.S. I hate to sound ignorant, but what exactly is "rationalisation" of small schools??

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Kildrummy, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
    2. Dear Listers, I am keen to contact anyone with any interest or knowledge of Kildrummy Primary School which is in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK. The school, to my knowledge, was built around 1803 and is therefore approaching its 200th anniversary. The pupils, staff and supporters are planning to write a book about the history of the school and are anxious to gather as much information as possible. I have been head of Kildrummy School since 1986 and the school roll is currently at a very low ebb. Rationalisation of small schools seems to be the name of the game so we want to commit the school's history to print before it is too late. All contacts will be answered and all help will be so gratefully received. With thanks, Margaret Parfitt

    3. Dear All: Here is the latest chapter from Burkes Peerage. There is becoming more recognition of the role that our Scottish Ancesters had on the USA history and even current events. These Scottish Ancesters had a large impact on the drafting of the constitution and the Bill of Rights etc. Anyway, here is the announcement and the location of the full article. Note that there are two chapters and you need to click on the bottom of the page to get to both chapters. Please feel free to forward to any other list or group that would be interested. Best Regards John A Hansen List Admin FROM BURKE’S PEERAGE AND GENTRY- AMERICA’S SCOTTISH HEROES The second chapter of Burke’s feature on Scottish Americans and their role in shaping US society is now online http://www.burkes-scotland.com In The Dollar to the Moon: Striving for Independence, Sarah Powell examines prominent Americans of Scottish descent, to show that “people of Scottish ancestry wielded a disproportionate influence on life in America.” The article highlights the major contribution of Scots colonialists in the push towards American Independence, pointing out that “as many as three quarters of the fifty-six signatories … of the Declaration of Independence … were Scots born or had some Scottish ancestry.” Indeed, Scottish influence continues right up to the present, as it is estimated that well over half of US Presidents to the present day have had some Scottish blood. Powell looks at the contributions of some of these presidents, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Franklin Roosevelt. She looks also at Scottish military prowess and the “numerous important revolutionary leaders of Scottish blood.” Powell’s article shows that “in making war as in forging peace and pursuing freedom and prosperity”, Scottish Americans have played, and are continuing to play a vital role in American life. 2. Karen Spencer
    3. Hi to all members I would like to introduce myself as a new member. My name is Karen Spencer and I live in Alberta. I am new to genealogy. I do have some family lines I am researching in Scotland....in particular Kirkudbright and Dumfries. My surnames are Robson/Dobie/Chron/Fairbeard I have seen the 1881 census for Kirkudbright. I have John Robson who married Janet Dobie in 1849. They had Robert, Agnes, John, William, Jane, George, James, Joseph and Janet. John's father was James Robson born 1799 and his mother was Jane Harris born 1798. Janet Dobie's parents were Thomas (don't know his date of birth) and Sarah Chron (don't know her date of birth) or either's parents. So that is my history and I would appreciate any help or any information that someone else may have....thanks in advance!
