Years ago someone gave me information that he came to the U.S. 1 June 1811. He lived in Johnstown, Fulton County, New York and then moved to St. Lawrence County, N. Y. where he died in 1880 in the Town of Oswegatchie. Any help would be appreciated, as we would like to see the place from which he came. Thank you. Mary

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Re:(SCT~ROOTS) Trip to Scotland
    2. Donald M. Scantland
    3. To: Grant Muckart Here is what we have on Fielding Scantland, Scandland, Scantling. ( scantling is an old English unit of measure) This was prepared by a first cousin more than 20 years ago after onsite research in Washington, D.D. and Virginia. "Book T, page 378 of the Culpeper County Records notes the following entry: "Washington from Trustees to Fielding Scandland, June 16, 1798."" "From the COMPENDIUM OF AMERICAN GENEALOGY, Volume VII. FIELDING SCANTLING came from Scotland to Virginia, His son James W. Scantling (1804-1888) married Mary Yeager. James and Mary's daughter, Caroline Elizabeth (1829-1888, in 1849 married Dr. James Augustus (1826-1911). Dr. Augustus was a physician and surgeon and resided in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Ainsworth, Nebraska." " The 1810 Federal Census of Virginia, page 114, notes that Fielding Scantling resided in Culpeper County, Virginia and was head of household and that he and his wife were over forty-five. They had two boys under age 10, two boys from ten to sixteen and two boys sixteen to twenty-six. Ther was one girl between sixteen and twenty-six." "The 1820 Federal Census of Virginia, page 157 notes that Fielding Scantling was a resident of Shenandoah County, Strawsbury Township, Virginia. There were no Scantlings or Scantlands as Head of household in Culpeper County in 1820" I just got started in Family History research last summer. Have found that Dr. James Augustus (above) should be Dr. James Augustus Kenaston per FIRST FAMILIES OF AMERICA, page 257, under Kenaston, Thomas Corwin. It also says that Mary Yeager (1802-1868) married James W. Scanland (1804-1888) of Washington, VA in 1827 at Woodstock, VA. My source for this page and page 699 in next paragraph is Genealogy.com Family Archive Image. On page 699, under Kenaston, Hampton Ray Jr. it says that Dr. James Augustus Kenaston married in 1849 to Caroline Elizabeth Scanland (1829-1888), daughter of James W and Mary Yeager. James W son of Fielding, "Scot. to Va." There is one Rootsweb.com site (39815) that refers to Fielding Scanland but the emphasis is on the Kenaston family. There is another one (23791) that seems to be confused. The Scantland/Hollingsworth/Manning/Lamb site is material that I uploaded. WFT Vol41 Tree 1079 has Fielding Scanland and is primarily about the Kenaston family. Thank you very much for your help and consideration. Don Scantland Ohio

    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Free DAR Lookups for Revolutionary War patriots
    2. John A Hansen
    3. Dear All: While this is a Scotland List , many of the ancestors left here to go to the Colonies and start a new life. They maintained their interest in Scotland and also made a great impact on the founding of the New United States of America. Some volunteers from the society of the Daughters of the American Revolution ( DAR) have established a wonderful new program for users of Rootsweb. These volunteers will do lookups in their database and records if you think one of your ancestors served in some capacity during the American Revolution. These volunteers have more databases that are available to them than the ones commonly used by the search engines. The process is fairly simple : Go to the DAR message board: There are two ways to do that: > www.rootsweb.com > message boards > topics > organizations and societies > DAR Or if you want the easy way :-) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.organizations.dar Address your message as follows: subject : DAR Lookup > surname> location > dates ( put your data in this format) In the body of the message put the information regarding the person. Please put one search per post please. Be sure to fill out the surnames box at the bottom since the new search engine will be keying on that item. Leave the email response box checked and you will be notified when the DAR volunteers respond . Give them a week or so to get to your request. We really appreciate their efforts. This info can be key for: a: joining these prestigious organizations ( DAR & SAR) b: sending a request for the copies of the files that were submitted and the information they have available. Many thanks to: Glenda Thompson DAR VIS Volunteer Vice Chrm. 1. [SCT~ROOTS] announcing DNA study for JOHNSON / JOHNSTON / JOHNSTONE surnames
    2. Linda Sparks Starr
    3. We are searching for volunteers for a DNA study of early JOHNSON / JOHNSTON immigrants to Virginia from the British Isles. We need males, who descend from males all along the line from the colonial Virginian. The cost PER test IF we send in six tests at a time is $99 for a study of 12 DNA markers and $159 for 21 markers. All that is required is a swab of saliva from the inside cheek, payment for the test, and a pedigree chart showing your line of descent. For those of you facing brickwalls with your JOHNSON / JOHNSTON ancestry, this is an opportunity to possibly find which family you belong to. Or to rule out which ones you don't belong with. Volunteers WILL BE persoanlly notified of how their results 'fit' in with our other findings (see URL below for what we've found so far) and the results of tests will be available (subject to minor delays) at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lksstarr/html/johnson.html For more information or to volunteer contact the project coordinator, Suzanne Johnston at SSJ145@aol.com Linda Sparks Starr lksstarr@mmcable.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lksstarr
