Trying to find information about the parents of Alexander Anderson, born November 1836, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. On his marriage registration he is listed as an Engine Keeper at a Coal Mine. He and his wife, Janet Morton, born 15 August 1840, emigrated to Ontario, Canada in the early 1860's. They were married at Newmilns, Ayrshire, the home town of Janet Morton. Alexander's father is listed on Alexander's marriage registration as William Anderson, Coal-Miner. Family stories say he was not from Lanarkshire originally. Alexander's mother, also on Alexander's marriage registration gives the name of Janet Sneddon. This is the sum total of what I know about William Anderson and Janet Sneddon. If anyone out there has any clues you will be helping me put a dent in one of my "brick walls." G.Webster

I'm trying to trace the birth place of a William McLean who emigrated to Australia sometime between 1846 and 1882, possibly around 1860's. He was born in Scotland in c1846, possibly in Wigtownshire (was Wigonshire on a certificate), however another certificate says he was born in Ayrshire and was an engine driver. William may have been an apprentice in brass foundry while in Scotland. My father says he thinks William came from somewhere half way between Glascow and Loch Lomand.........maybe the family travelled a little. He was living with a Margaret Jane Watson in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia and had a daughter Flora and a son Angus. If someone recognises William please make contact with me. Thanks Doug McLean(Tasmania)

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Fife Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 06:07:18 -0700 From: "Scott Fife" <saf@fast.net> To: <SCOTLAND-ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com> I am looking for information on John and William Fife of Scotland. They were born in 1721 and 1720. I have been trying to find out what part of Scotland they are from, and who their parents were. John married a Margaret Wright and William married Jane ?????? (We don't know her name, we've heard her first name was Jane). Any info that you could find would be appreciated. They supposedly had a brother Matthew born in 1745. All three went to Ireland, then John and William left for the USA approx 1766. Matthew stayed in Ireland and lived to be 100 years old.
