I lived in Lachine (by the way it is one word, no capital), for a number of years, and yes, you may have a problem. If the children were actually born in Lacine, whether they were Catholic or not, they may have been registered at the local Catholic Church, or again at the City Hall. However, Lachine, is a suburb of Montreal, and while I lived in Lachine, my children were born in a hospital in Montreal. Ours were registered at the Montreal City Hall. My last child was born in Montreal, but we were living in a community about 25 miles south, and although we are not of the Angilcan (Episcopalian in the U.S.) persuasion, the Town Hall of that community had arranged for any births to be registered by the the local Anglican minister, so he was so registered. However, some years later when we sent to the Register of Births, the Province of Quebec, Quebec City, P.Q. we got the certificate all right, but it was entirely in French. We do not speak French. This will give you som! e idea of what you are up against. I too ,have a brick wall. and like you found, on the Mormon Ancestral File, what seemed to be just what I was looking for. I too, wrote the Submitter, only in my case my letter was not returned, nor did they answer, so I understand your frustation. I am afraid I have not been very helpful, but I wish you all the luck in the world. G.Webster
HI: I am new to search in Scotland. I am working on my daughter-in-law's family of ARTHUR and have a problem. I know her great grandfather William ARTHUR was born in Dunbarton in 1860 along with a twin sister Catherine. William wrote a short autobiography in which he says he was one year old when they moved to Canada. He says "We left Helensburgh". Is that a town in Dunbarton. I am not familiar with the Parish names etc. for Scotland so please bear with me. They went to Montreal. There were eleven children in the family. William's father was Reverend Alexander Arthur of Dalkeith and his mother was a daughter of William Allan and Margaret Macauly - a cousin of Macauly's who had a home at Ardmcape on the Garelock. In my searching of the IGI I found - in the Ancestral Files - an Alexander Arthur married to Catherine Allan. These files show these two with eleven children married in 1845 but it has them all born in LaChine, Quebec, Canada. Now the family did settle there but according to William's autobiography some of the children were born in Scotland. The names of the children that he writes about match with the names in the IGI. I don't have any idea of where to go from here. It is all such a confusing mess - some of the childlren of Alexander and Catherine are shown born in Barony, Lanark, others in Row, Dunbarton, Blythswood, Glasgow - which confuses me. The Ancestral File is the only place where the Father Alexander is shown with a birth about 1820. The closest Alexander I can find a birth for otherwise is 1832 but my Alexander was married to Catherine in 1845. That certainly doesn't fit in. Can anyone tell me where to go with this - how to proceed. I tried writing to the submitter to the Ancestral File but my letter came back. I'm stumped!!! Regards, and thanks for listening, Gladys In Colorful Colorado gjensen@rmi.net

Seeking ancestors of John Thomson, "of Arbroath," supposedly b. 12 Mar 1834. Certificate for his marriage to Louisa Sophia Waddell lists his residence as Arbroath and his occupation as tailor, ditto and ditto for his father James. However, the only listing in the Old Parish Records in the right time frame is a christening in Oct 1834 in Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire, for John, the son of James and Mary (Reid) Thomson. Girthon is not that far from Sunderland, but why would someone from Kirkcudbrightshire end up in Arbroath? Also, there's no marriage record for a Mary Reid marrying a James Thomson, in Girthon or anywhere else. Can anyone answer these question, and end years of frustration?
Am searching for any information on the Charles Hughes family. Charles moved to Scotland from Ireland about 1830-34 and married Ann Sweeney 1835. Their children, Hugh Joseph, John J., Jane, Bridget, Margaret, Catherine, were all born in Scotland. Catherine married Matthew McHugh in Scotland. Charles worked the mines around Airdrie, Old-New Monkland area. Hugh Joseph attended St.Joseph's school in Glasgow. They all immigrated to US around 1865-66, except for Catherine & Matthew McHugh, who both died in an accident in Scotland. They wound up in Madison Co. and Montgomery Co., Illinois. Any information would be appreciated and I would be glad to share what I have. Thanks. Georgia geerwin@darientel.net
My ancestor, John MACINTYRE, was born on Lismore in 1788. He was in the Navy during the Peninsular War and then went to Paisley in 1815. He married Janet SLOAN there and had two children, John Stevenson and Janet, before leaving for Canada in 1819. He settled in Lanark CountyOntario, Dalhouse Township. He left for Perth County in 1846 and settled near St. Mary's, Ontario where he died. Is anyone researching this family or the area of Lismore? Any help appreciated. Thank you. I am seeking information on Jessie Fraser and James Law. James was a draper, possibly in New York. He and Jessie had a daughter Mary Ann who was married 18.07.1871 at New Jersey to Alexander Bell a seaman from Largo in Fife (Scotland). Fraser and Bell are Scottish names, so presumably the family came orginally from Scotland and found themselves, around the early part of the 19th centry in New York, somehow. Alexander Bell and Mary Ann Law were my husband's great grandparents. If anybody can help us to find the origins of Jessie and James Law, I would be very grateful.
I am searching for ancestors of George NEILSON and William JOHNSON, both were my 6th great grandfathers. They were both Jacobite prisoners, captured in Preston. George had a son, William NELSON (name changed)......William Johnson had a daughter, Hannah Johnson.......... William and Hannah were married about 1745. Any information will be appreciated. Will gladly share the information that I have on their descendants. Mary Nelson Pazur Kennesaw, Georgia USA
Seeking info on Adam Gard(i)ner who is said to have emigrated to America from Greenock, Scotland, in Dec 1774 on the ship "James", arriving in America in February 1774. After marrying Hel(l)en Mitchell, they resided in Tinnerwich, near Flushing, Long Island. The Albany County (NY) census of 1790 shows Adam, Helen, a son of 16, two sons under 16 , and two daughters. Shortly thereafter, they relocated from NY to Washington County, PA, and from there to Adams Co., OH, about 1800. He was killed by Indians in 1801 on a return trip to PA before the birth of his youngest son. Adam's father is thought to have been named John. Any help with Adam, his family, and ancestry would be most appreciated. I have some info on his children which I would be happy to share with anyone connected to this line. Thanks, Bob.

Hi Kate - I'm confused. When you say "more" information -- do you already have birth records? If not, the first place to look is the IGI (www.familysearch.org -- and look under search). If you already have the IGI reference -- then you need to get the exact citation from the Old Parish Registers (OPR) -- which will provide the complete entry. Having the surname Glasgow makes it difficult to search with the City Glasgow appearing so often in the records, but---. John Glasgow, born about 1755-1760. In Huntingdon Co., PA, USA by late 1780s. Wife was Margaret Taylor, or Hunter, or Watts. I believe it to have been Taylor. Children were Richard, John, Hannah, Jane, Matthew, William, Samuel & Taylor Different stories say (1)John was a deserter from the British army in the Colonies dur=ing the Revolution. (2)Another says he and his family came over during the Revolution. Another says he came up to Pennsylvania from one of the US Southern States during the war. I realize my information is sketchy but I have little to go on. Do any of the names and/or places ring a bell with anyone? Jack Glasgow
