    1. [SCT~ROOTS] Charles Hughes/Airdrie
    2. Georgia Burgess-Erwin
    3. I would appreciate any information and/or addresses that would help me locate information on my ancestors. Charles Hughes emigrated to Scotland from Ireland (born 1815, Co.Tyrone, Ireland) about 1834. He married Ann Sweeney 1835, in Old Monkland, Scotland. They lived in the Airdrie, Lanarkshire, area--Faskine. They moved a lot and lived in five different areas in the 22 or so years they lived in Airdrie/Glasgow, Scotland He worked in the mines and they both were Catholics. Some of their children were Hugh Joseph, Margaret, Ann, Catherine, Jane, John, Charles. All were born in the Airdrie/Glasgow area, and in the 1861 Census they lived in the Parish of St. George. Some Hughes and Sweeneys are listed as sponsors for the children's baptisms, (Hugh Sweeney, Francis Sweeney, Bridget Sweeney, Catherine Quinn, Helen Quinn, Henry Hughes---but have no way of knowing if the Hughes are related to Charles and the Sweeneys to Ann and who are the Quinns? Surely they are related, but I have no proven connection. I have no knowledge of Charles' siblings, or parents. I have no knowledge of Ann's parents, but believe the Sweeneys were all born in Co.Sligo, Ireland. Ann Sweeney's sister, Catherine, married Matthew McHugh about 1845, in Scotland--and died there from an accident before 1865. They had two children, Matthew and Bridget. Bridget married James McKillop in Scotland. Around 1865-66 everyone immigrated to the USA in two groups. I think one of the ships was Caledonia and one was Hibernia. I have no idea where they landed in the US or from where they departed. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Georgia geerwin@darientel.net

Anytime from Scotland 1600s, all the way through a John Gordon McComb, wife Jane Gordon em. to US in 1755 (This John Gordon McComb is my "7th grandfathers cousin"). 3. To all listers seeking records within Scotland I suggest you consult the following websites: National Archives of Scotland >http://www.nas.gov.uk The NAS hold indices of church (parish) records, mainly Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) but also a few others eg. Episcopalian, RC etc. General Register Office for Scotland > http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk Email address > records@gro.scotland.uk The GRO holds records of births, marriages & deaths from 1855, it also holds Old Parish Records (OPR's) from 1553 to 1854, again Church of Scotland only. It is very diffucult to access information about non-Church of Scotland records unless you know the exact parish in which an ancestor was christened, married or buried. In response to the query regarding Aberdeenshire, yes this is in Scotland. Quite a lot of the old counties are now defunct eg Kirkcudbrightshire is now Dumfries & Galloway. Shire is the old name for county. A good quality map should show most if not all the villages, towns & cities enquirers seek. 2. Hello listers, I am still researching my Miller's with no luck, I am trying to find out a few different things First is info on my G G G G G grandfather Joshua Miller. He had two sons first being Joshua Miller b: around 1779 d: 11 11 1851 He married Elizabeth 1799, who was born 1784. They had 9 children and he had 3 others from another marriage, (I have the children's names if anyone would like to see them.) Second born was Jacob Miller b: 1786 in Erie Co. NY d: 10 28 1869. 3. Hello, I am so new to the world of genealogy but am intrigued with what I have found and want to learn more. From all that I have found in my searches is; my grgrgrgrgrandfather was Malcolm McCourry and was born 29 August 1742 in ISLAY, Scotland, but I do not know where. I have no idea who his parents were or anything about him prior to coming to the US or how he got here or when he came. As I have found out he settled in Morris County, NJ and married Rachel Freeman in Morristown in 1776, served in the Revolutionary War and had 5 daughters and one one son. In 1794 he left NJ and moved to NC and married a Sally or Sarah Lynn and had 3 sons and one daughter. He died in1829 in Yancey County, NC. I would appreciate information on reference books and where to purchase them. I have seen several books listed over the past few weeks but am concerned with the ones that would be the best reference library for me considering the cost of out of print books. What is the best monthly publication on genealogy? Any and all help will be appreciated. Thank you, Phyllis White email address: gmwhite@bellsouth.net

    3. I posted that I would like to also have a lookup in Scots origins for my husband's grandmothers family. I received 6 answers. Of these six 5 were identical except for the attachment name. I tried opening them. I could not. I cannot view attachments usually with my webtv. But if I open one, I can spread it on to others unknowingly. I wrote telling them I could not view these attachments and what did they say? I received 2 answers. I stating DON'T OPEN her email attachment as it was infected with the Badtrans (I think) virus. She had unknowingly gotten it and sent it on to me. My other answer was a repeat of my message with another attachment. All together I received 6 attachments I could not open and all were a virus. I forwarded them on to someone else unknowingly so I could view them on their computer and their McAffee virus detector did not detect a virus. But their computer refused to let us open them Thank God. Just letting everyone know that If I get one I will not know it as Webtv does not get them but can spread them and I would not know it. That is the way this webtv server works Thanks Cindy

    3. Beverley Creich is located in Fife, Scotland, 5 miles NW of Cupar on the Firth of Tay. The records you seek may be held by the General Register Office for Scotland. They hold old parish records (OPR's) of baptisms, marriages & deaths from 1553 to 1854. They also hold births, marriages & deaths from 1855 & census returns. Web address > http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk , Email > mailto:records@gro-scotland.gov.uk Be warned though, they only hold OPR's for the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian). Any others eg. Episcopalian, Roman Catholic, Quakers etc are very difficult to find. I have been searching for my gt. grandmothers baptism in 1848 for years without success. Many churches still hold their own records. The National Archive Service for Scotland has an index to some parish records.
