Our ancestors adhered (some closely, some haphazardly) to a pattern in naming their children that can be used as clues when seeking parent names. Here is the pattern: 1st son: Father's father 2nd son: Mother's father 3rd son: Father 1st daur: Mother's mother 2nd daur: Father's mother 3rd daur: Mother I have found later children to be named after the grandparents of the father & mother as well as after siblings of the father and mother. So when John and Mary have these children: Malcolm David Margaret Ann.... ...it's *possible* John's parents are Malcom and Ann while Mary's are David and Margaret.
