    1. Re: [SCOTS~GEN] SCOTT family
    2. Hi Sheila, You asked if I know of any siblings of Mary Ann GRAHAM. Well, yes and no. I only know what has been passed through the family by word of mouth plus a bit which I only found out within the last 2 weeks. What I know for certain is that her father was called James and when she married Robert Alexander SCOTT in 1886 her father was already dead. Mary Ann stated that she was 25 when she married so that would make her year of birth 1860/1. She lived in Gateshead at the time. A witness at her marriage was Rachel Ann Graham - my grandmother, Mary Ann's daughter, was Rachel Ann Graham Scott!! so this may have been a sister. If so, I have traced someone of this name with parents William and Mary Ann GRAHAM. Regarding siblings, I've just spent 2 1/2 hours in the local history section of the library in Newcastle trying to trace the GRAHAM family on census records without success, but the following is the family oral history of the GRAHAMs: Sister: Emily GRAHAM - was said to be the 'seventh daughter of a seventh daughter' and was well know for reading the tea leaves rather accurately. Surprising as she was a very respectable upright lady. I think she died in around 1950. Brother: James GRAHAM - or rather Sir James - was a tea planter on one of the islands off China. Brother: John GRAHAM - was a minister - was in Africa when the Mau Mau raids took place. My father can remember my grandmother getting letters from him. John fell out with James because of the way he treated his workers. If Emily was the seventh daughter there must have been others, though they may not have survived, although I vaguely remember something my grandmother said about visiting two maiden aunts and being terrified. Possibly other sisters. I think Mary Ann (or rather Polly as she was called) was the youngest in the family. Sorry I don't have much information but as I said I've only just received a copy of her marriage certificate. I had been told that they came from Haydon Bridge in Northumberland so Gateshead was a bit of a surprise. I had also been told that the GRAHAMS were from Scotland so the fact that the SCOTTs were from Scotland too was also news. Hope this information may be of use. Pat
