While there is a Community of Faith which occupies the site of the original Columban Monastic site, it would not claim to have anything more than a most tenuous connection with St Columba. As you will see from its web site, the Iona Community is an ecumenical body of clergy and lay people who while living apart from community seek to keep a number of corporate disciplines. The Iona Community - (founded 1938 by George MacLeod) is most definitely non Monastic The Columban Community, which would have been a collection of huts around the Church (or more than one Church) was abandoned in favour of Dunkeld in Scotland and/or Kells in Ireland at the height of the Viking raids. There may have been a number of solitary continuing religious. It is however generally accepted that there was no permanent religious community on Iona until the 12th Century when first of all an Nunnery, and then a Monastery were built. Both of these buildings fell into disrepair and the Communities were retired after the Scottish Reformation. (from 1560). The Abbey and Cathedral Church was rebuilt by contract labour in the early years of the 20th Century while the Monastic buildings were restored between 1938 and 1965 mainly by voluntary work. Interesting discussion on Iona. My husband and I were lucky enough to meet the Lord McCleod on a terrible rainy day while visiting Iona as tourists. He was a very old man at the time and the visitors added up to about 20 people, not counting the sheep wandering the island. He stood in front of the little church and told us about Iona and its past and the people buried there. I understood that he was the person who fought for restoring that area and took great pride in what he did. Kate __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
