I have been researching the OATES line of the my mother's family for 28 or more years, and I had been side tracked by wrong information from bad sources. Can anyone tell me if the OATES surname might have appeared throughout Scots History, they were as far as I am aware of Anglo-Saxon. Any help or advise on where I could check would be appreciated. I have taken the line back to James date of birth between 1647 and 1660. He first appeared in North Carolina in the 1690s. Died there in 1703. Thank you Jacob L.
