    1. [ScotlandGenWeb] WILLIAMS, a Scot born in Circassia

    3. My great great grandfather was Thomas WILLIAMS, a lighterman, in Brooklyn, NY from the 1860s to his death in 1898. His death certificate indicates that he was born in Asia! In fact on two of his children's birth certificates he states that he was born in Dargo in Circassia in Asia. US Census records show that his parents were "Scotch". His birth year is likely somewhere between 1829 and 1834. I have looked for many years for a connection between Scotland and Circassia in that timeframe, but I haven't been able to figure out what both his parents might have been doing in that part of the world. From what I've been able to learn Dargo is in what is currently Chechenya and Circassia is the Caucusus region of the former Soviet Republic. Recently, I found a replica of an English apothecary pot. The label reads "Fragrant Circassian Cream" prepared only by H. C. Baildon Article Halls 75 Princes Mart (Edinburgh)." This is the first time I've found a connection between Scotland and Circassia! Does anyone familiar with the history of Scotland or the British Empire know why a Scots couple would have been in that region of the world? If I don't learn why they were there, I know I'll never be able to find out who they were. Any ideas or suggestions for research would be gratefully appreciated. Char-Lu Dinger Chico, CA, USA
