I have tried http://www.familysearch.org and Ellis Island without any success. There are some William Archibald's listed but I don't think any one of them is mine. I have sent to the Norwich Connecticut, U.S., City Clerk for William John Archibald's death cert. and to the local Norwich newspaper for his Obit but have not received anything back yet. I found him in the 1930 Norwich census and I know that he died in Norwich 31 Jan 1937. I looked in the 1881 census but don't have enough info on William to find him. Am I correct that Glasgow is in the Lowlands? What county? 1881 is the only census that covers Scotland I have access to. I would be happy to pay a fee for a birth, death, marriage or baptismal certificate. Would they take American money??? Thank you Jean for writing and the help. I also wish you well with your research! John
Hi, the 1881 census on the LDS site does not over Scotland. The Scottish Records Office site, http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Has the census for 1881, 1891 and 1901, with very good search tools. Once you find the one you want, you can view the actual census pages. They also have searchable indexes of all Scottish births (1855-1902) and marriages (1855-1927), death records (1855-1952), plus images for many of them. They also have all the avaliable OPR's. More images are comming on line all the time and the 1841,1851,1861 & 1871 census are due at the end of the year. It is all very cheap 6GBP (about $9US) for 30 credits, you can get up to 25 entries per page and each page costs 1 credit, the images of actual documents cost 5 credits each. You can buy your credits on your credit card over a secure connection. Have a look at the site, I can highly recommend it. If anyone has any queries, please feel free to ask. cheers John Dods Wellington, New Zealand. --- JohnMxzz@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 2/23/2003 1:47:34 PM Eastern > Standard Time, > jeanbean@baymoon.com writes: > > << Aye, Laddie...you may need some assistance but if > these are your ancestors, > then ye are a Scottish descendant, so we say > welcome! > >> > > Hi Jean; > > Thank you for the Welcome!!! > > I have tried http://www.familysearch.org and Ellis > Island without any > success. John, Your set of CD's must be different from any I have heard of. Mine cover Scotland very nicely. George M. McCaig, Burlington, Ontario
Sorry George for putting you crook. I was refering to the 1881 census on line FREE, at the LDS site. I realise that the the LDS put out a CD which you can buy from them, or have very nice people on lists do look ups, which includes all the British Isles. cheers John --- George McCaig <casagem@sympatico.ca> wrote: > John, > Your set of CD's must be different from any I have > heard of.
