Dear All Have been lurking for some months now and have really enjoyed this list. Thanks to Betty Wintersteen for her transcripts of the "Royal Lunatic Asylum of Montrose" Sunnyside, Montrose, Forfar. What a labour of love. I've read through them all "just in case ...!" But when reading through page 14 of 25 October 1999 Catherine BAIN M 41 F Golspie, Sunderland, Durham, England Occ: Gen Worker Handicap Lunatic' Please note - Golspie is in Sutherland, Scotland I was reminded of an item (I think it was on the Scots Origins Site or it may have been in one of the Family History Magazines her in the UK) which told of the error in the 1881 Census where an over-zealous transcriber (not the poor census enumerators) entered most of the "Sutherland, Scotland" entries as "Sunderland, Durham, England". So that if you search for entries by parish name and Sutherland, you will not find them, whereas if you use the parish name and Sunderland, you will find them. If you have been researching Sutherland on the 1881 census, and not had much luck, that may be the reason. They are all there, you just have to use cunning to defeat the system. Perhaps using just the parish name will work as well. Apologies to all who already knew about this aberration.
