Was there a census in Ireland or Scotland before 1738? My family came to America in this year and I am having trouble tracing them before 1738. However, the 1881 Census is well worth buying. I have found dozens of relatives on it. The LDS sells it, and you can order it through www.familysearch.org. You can also use their "Custom Search" option to search the IGI.
