Dear Janet and list, I think we may be overlooking a big piece of info in her email. That is her profession as a domestic servant. Even if Scotch College was for male students only, an employee of the school could easily have been a woman. If she was an impoverished orphan, the chances of being a 'scholar' would been greatly diminished. Just my thoughts on the subject.
