The later route, faster but more dangerous (but what the hell, time was money and passenger comfort and safety were not important) was by the Great Circle Route, into the Southern Ocean some 800 miles south of Capetown and then east to Melbourne, dodging the antarctic icebergs on the way. One ship at least disappeared completely and others limped into Melbourne after striking icebergs. Don Charlwood's book "Settlers Under Sail", Burgewood Books, Melbourne, describes the era well.
