Hello Le, According to - Collins book (ISBN 0-00-435665-9)(£5. GBP) SCOTS KITH & KIN - A Guide to the Clans and Surnames of Scotland. The Surname GAY was found in ANGUS from the 15th c. - and in FIFE from the 17th c. The Surname GAYRE belonged to the Clan GAYRE.. GAYRE of GAYRE and NIGG, arose in CORNWALL (England) in the 12th century. One branch settled in Yorkshire (England) in the 15th century and crossed into SCOTLAND in the 16th century and held lands in NIGG in Ross-shire. They rapidly multiplied and became land owners throughout EASTER ROSS. A small clan, it was recognised by LORD LYON ( In Edinburgh) earlier this century. SEPTS of the clan GAYRE are as follows - GAIR - GAIRE - GEAR - GAYRE - GAIRN - GEIR - MCGAIR - MCGEIR -GARRISON - GARSON - KERRISON - MCGIRR. Hope this helps a little.
