I am researching an incident in Devon in 1787 when two excise men, JOHN SCOTT and JOHN JENKINS were killed by smugglers. SCOTT being a Scottish name, I hope that someone on this List may have come across the incident. Three of the smugglers were hanged for the crime, one transported, one escaped clean away and another possibly died of wounds. There was a third excise man, unnamed, who escaped. If anyone has come across anything, however small a reference, to this JOHN SCOTT I would be grateful to hear from them. I would like to know something of the family circumstances of the excise men. Thank you. Ivy Trott in Fish Hoek, Cape Province, South Africa.
