    3. Hello listers, I have just subscribed to this list, and hope some of you may be able to teach me some tricks in researching family from Scotland. Just this week, I was able to find my husband's grandmother, Mary Ann Caroline DAVIS on the 1901 census, living with her widowed mother Lucy G DAVIS. I've done a lot of family research in England and Wales, but this is my first foray into Scotland. On the 1901 online Greenwich census, Mary's age was 20 and her place of birth was given as Scotland. Her mother Lucy was listed as being 47 years old, and born in Woolwich. All of Mary's younger siblings on the census were born in Greenwich. There are no siblings on the 1901 census older than Mary living in the household, so I don't know if there are older children who also may have been born in Scotland. Prior to finding the family on the 1901 census, I knew nothing of Mary's background or relatives except that on her marriage certificate (Feb 1902), her father's name was listed as Robert and that she had lived in Greenwich prior to getting married. Her marriage took place in Blackheath. A couple of other researchers have tried to find Mary and family on the 1881 census for England, but haven't been successful. It may be that the family resided in Scotland during the 1881 census. Mary would have been about 4 or 5 months old during the 1881 census. What is the best way to proceed in finding out more about Mary and her family? I feel kind of stuck without knowing what town or county in Scotland she was born in, so I don't know where to begin my search. I also do not know where her father was born, or where or when her parents got married. I have tried looking on the IGI to no avail. Is there an online resource similiar to freeBMD for Scotland? Thanks in advance for any help. Patricia Rowley Las Vegas USA
