    3. Good Morning Annie, When I was a little boy my grandmother who was born in 1890 told me we were descended from Rob Roy's family via his sister. I repeated this tale to my children and in due course when my son was studying history at university he challenged me to prove it. This is why I became interested in genealogy. My son's first objection was that Rob Roy's sister's children would have used their father's name. I explained to him that Highlanders frequently used their mother's name and their father and mother might well have had the same name. Unfortunately, the McGREGOR line is one I have had a little success with. My most remote McGREGOR ancestor is William McGREGOR born circa 1780. (He used the spelling McGRIGOR.) William was a blacksmith, married to Janet FERGUSSON. I do not know where he was born. His son Andrew born in 1808 worked and died in Glasgow. The IGI indicates another son, William, who was born in 1815 to William McGRIGOR and Janet FERGUSSON. There are a number of McGrigor's who were married to Ferguson in the graveyard at Balquhidder. Can you help me? John Shearer
