    3. I know that this is not strictly genealogy but an answer will help my researches. Would the fact that a tenant farmer on Speyside in the latter part of the 18th century was able to correspond by letter with relatives in London indicate that he was unusually well educated for the time, or was Scottish education then as much better than English as it is commonly held to be now?
