    1. [ScotlandGenWeb] 30 May 1774 Schetland to Wilmington
    2. Would sure like to know if anyone out there can connect to this Ross below. If so, I'd sure love to hear from you.. 30 May 1774 Commisioners of the Customs of Scotland "Report of the Examination of the Emigrants from the counties of Caithness and Sutherland on the board the Ship Bachelor of Leith bound for Wilmington, North Carolina" John Ross, aged 47, a widower hath six children, from 20 to 5 years old, who emigrat with him, by trade a farmer, last at Kabel in the parish of Farr and county of Sutherland, upon the Estate of Sutherland. Goes to Carolina, becasue the rent of his Posession was greatly advanced the price of cattle which must pay that rent reduced more than one half, and bread which they must always buy excessively dear. The Evil is the greater that the Estate being parcelled out to different Factors and Tacksmen, these must opress the subtenants, in order to raise a profit to themselves, particularly on the article of cattle, which they never fail to take at their own prices, lately at 20/_ or 20 merks, and seldom or never higher than 30/ tho' the same cattle have been sold in the Country from 50 to 55 sh. By these means reduced in his circumstances, and encouraged by his friends already in America, he hopes to live more comfortably in that Country. >From Page 147 and 148 of "Ship Passenger ListsĀ  The South (1538-1825) " edited by Carl Boyer, 3rd Audrey Orlando, FL

    3. Hi, I have just joined the list. I did a search of my surname, DODS, on the list achive & came up with a hit, which was from Julie back in Nov 1998. Julie I've sending this to you direct also just in case you have subscequently unsubscibed, so you may end up with two copies of this. Jullie listed her research interests which included DODS and SHERRIFF. According to my DODS family tree, produced back in 1880 in Haddington, East Loithian, My ggg grandfather,William DODS (1795-1873) married Harriet SHIRREFF (1804-1853)in Mungowells, East Loithian. William's grandfather William DODS (c1711-1795) came to Haddington from Cransaws, Berwickshire. Julie I hope we have a connection. I've recently started this genealogy game and love to hear from anyone who has some information on my family. And doublely so if your a distant cousin. Thanks for taking the time to read this. 1. [ScotlandGenWeb] Janet Haddow of Carluke or "Gill" of USA
    2. Karen Fell
    3. Listers: I am trying to find more about Janet Haddow. She was born c.1778-1783 (I am pretty sure in Carluke) She married William Fell in 1799 in Cambusnethan (he emigrated to Canada c.1830) She stayed behind ..... She died 19 March 1850. She may be related to John Haddow (brother?) b.1762 of Easterseet, Carluke, Lanark who married Elizabeth Hamilton. They had a son James Haddow b.05Apr1803 in Carluke. Also, I am trying to find out about somebody close to her who is referred to as "Gill" who emigrated to the USA sometime before her death in 1850. A Gill Haddow? maybe? In a letter dated 21Mar1850 from Janet Haddow's son Thomas Fell, sent to Canada ... it tells of Janet's death: "I have sent you a news paper where her death appears & have sent one to Gill to the states, I may get no thanks for it but I cannot help it. She requested me to take her to Carluke if I could get liberty to lay her in the Gaush__nt lair. George Hamilton called & told me that when he sold the property to his brother that he had reserved the rights of the Burying ground for Mother & family at Carluke." Any connections or info anybody might have ....would be greatly appreciated. Karen Fell, Canada
